Brandy vs. Bristol: How does elimination work on 'Dancing With the Stars'?

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas on DWTS How did singer Brandy get booted from "Dancing With the Stars" after pulling a perfect score for one of her dances with Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Monday night? And how did Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas survive another week despite coming in last with the judges more often than not?

Allow the Ministry to show you the math.

According to the "DWTS" website, couples are ranked by a combination of two scores -- the percentage of total judges' points they are awarded plus the percentage of viewer votes they get. The pair with the lowest combined total goes home.

(OK, this really is math. Hang in there.)

On Monday, Brandy and Maks earned a total of 57 points for their two dances, with 53 for Bristol and Mark, 58 for Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer, and a perfect 60 for Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough. That's a total of 228 points handed out by the judges, leaving the couples ranked as follows, before viewer voting was done: Jennifer/Derek, 26.3%; Kyle/Lacey, 25.4%; Brandy/Maks, 25%; and Bristol/Mark, 23.2%.

Brandy on Dancing With the Stars So while in raw numbers Brandy and Maks were a full four points higher than Bristol and Mark in the judging, and separated by 3.6 points -- 51.8% to 48.2% -- when compared head to head, there was a difference of only 1.8 points between the two couple in the context of the entire field. And that was only half the battle.

If the audience votes had broken evenly, with each couple getting 25% of the vote, that order would have held, with each team having 25 points added to their total. But Bristol and Mark really didn't have that much to make up -- obviously getting at least 1.9% more of the popular vote than the eliminated twosome. And viewers, who theoretically vote for their favorites via phone, text message and online, must be motivated to give their support, not lulled into complacency or put off.

Seriously, who's more likely to spark an energetic fan reaction -- Brandy or Bristol?

"We consistently have had Bristol at the bottom or the bottom two and the viewers bring her back, and it's because they want to see her dance again," judge Len Goodman said after Monday night's show.

"In this case, you cross the finish line first and somebody barely finishes, and you get a tie because they showed heart," Chmerkovskiy said on "Good Morning America" Wednesday. "It's kind of difficult for me to deal with."

Moral of the story? If you get out the vote, there's no reason to shoot your TV.

Why is it okay for DWTS to sign people up to get viewers and then people cry foul when those "names" actually accomplish something?

The judges cover the talent end, the public covers the "stars" end, however you want to define "stars".

Nobody complains when the obligatory "older" star that they signed up for the name recognition gets the boot 'cause they can't keep up. It's dollars and entertainment. That's all. I vote for Bristol every week. Should she win? Probably not, but I like to see how she improves every week, and to be honest, I like the fact that every week she stays is another pay day for her beautiful boy.

Kudos to Mark as well for being a class act under all the scrutiny.

Don't watch the show, but now that politics has made it's way into it I will definitely not be watching it. Can't believe little miss piggy is still on the show.

It's a shame that people are being eliminated from the Dancing with the stars competition that are really good dancers - when a mediocre dancer is kept on the program because of her mother.

Dancing should not be ruled by politics. The program has really dropped in popularity - Why bother watching something that is fixed from the start.

The judges votes should count for more than the public.

If Bristol wins - I for one - will never watch this farce of a program again.

Even though Bristol's dancing has improved - she is still not in the same catagory as a dancer as the other contestants.

When she cried she wanted to go home - why didn't they let her.

The results are unrealistic.

This is supposed to be a dancing show -not a political campaign.

What gives with the voters?????????

This season has the most upsets! I think its pitiful that Bristol is still on, she doesn't have much personality at all. I think she has stayed while some really wonderful dancers have had to leave, Bristol is a horrible dancer!!!

I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE OUT COME OF DANCING WITH THE STARS. I WILL NOT BE WATCHING THE SHOW ANYMORE BECAUSE IT IS VERY UNFAIR. BRISTOL PALIN SHOULD HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM THE SHOW A LONG TIME AGO. AND JENNIFER GREY HAS HAD EXPERIENCE WITH DANCING SO WHY IS SHE EVEN ON THE SHOW. ITS A VERY UNFAIR SHOW AND ITS NOT WORTH WATCHING ANYMORE. THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE SHOW IS FOR CELEBRITIES THAT DONT HAVE ANY DANCE EXPERIENCE TO LEARN BALL ROOM DANCING AND COMPETE FOR THE BEST. JUST LIKE LAST SEASON THEY HAD THAT GIRL FROM THE PUSSY CAT DOLLS ON THERE AND SHE WON. WHY WAS SHE EVEN ON THERE WHEN SHES KNOWN FOR BEING A DANCER. THE SHOW IS VERY UNFAIR...

I would like to know who is forcing all you anti-Bristol fans to watch the show? Stop pissing in your ear and watch something else.

I always thought that the best dancer was what fans of the show voted for because that is the point of watching which I have done for several years but am really disappointed in the way things have went this year through the the season

I thought this show was named DANCING WITH THE STARS, and I also thought Bristol Palin was just a daughter of someone that was running for vice-president so is that how she got the star status ?? I never know she was considered to be a star, so that is why I was confused from the start, please correct me if I am wrong, I know a lot of unwed teenage moms and they are not considered to be a star. I am not a star, but can I be considered to dance on the show???

Here we go again...didn't this happen with Kate G.? She was aweful yet they continued to have her on. OK I admit i did tune in once or twice to laugh at her stiff dancing and crying sessions but I would have liked to have seen Brandy continue.

That's it im watching MQB on Univision.

I think this has turned into a political situation. I do not care what horse race you are looking at, the horse with heart so to speak, could run last, he does not win the race unless he is the fastest horse.

I think the tea party is trying to make a statement. I am not against the tea party, I am against making this into a political statement.

This race so to speak, was between the two best dancers; Jennifer and Brandy.

Holy crap. I can't believe that all these people are in a life or death situation if Bristol wins. Come on people. it's a fan based show and they, the show producers, the judges and hosts, encourage everyone to vote for their favorite dancer. Thats what all the people were doing when they voted for Bristol. Good grief, the world won't stop turning if your favorite dancer does not win. That life. There are just more people out there that voted for Bristol than the other dancers that has been put out. Live with it.

This does not explain why, when I called to vote for Brandy, after redialing numerous times to get thru the busy signal, when my call finally went thru it was automatically disconnected (not once but 3 times). Seems a bit suspicious to me. I was going to 'test' the theory by calling Bristol's number to see if I got thru with the same result but didn't want to risk voting for her.

All you Bristol haters and the ones that say they won't watch the show again, we all know you will watch because you know nobody knows if you arewatching or not. Enjoy the dancing and accept the outcome. It's only a show. Life will go on.

Wow, the beauty of this show is that the viewers DO have a say in who wins. Now, when someone like Bristol clearly gets support from many of the viewers, people have to start writing hateful things about her and the show.

Keep in mind that this show is pure entertainment. I voted for Bristol. Why? I have never felt she had the best technique among the finalists, but she has a presence and style of performing that is captivating, sincere and real. As a former performer and newscaster, I know that judging a performance is a very subjective thing. Bristol has also done an outstanding job. Look how far she has come with NO dance experience. Sometimes the so-called under dog does prevail because of some powerful and hard-earned effort. Bristol, you are a beautiful young lady! You deserve what you have achieved. Congrats! -:)

The judges are to blame also. They gave Palin's daughter higher marks than she deserved and in some cases the same marks as much better dancers every time Sara Palin showed up on the show. They were so in love with the mother that they gave fat and clumsy Palin, an advantage by deliberately giving her marks she did not deserve, narrowing the margin between the dancers with actual talent.

White America is still trying to put Black America in their place, I dare anyone in the USA to say racism does not exist today after seeing Brandi, a black woman, work hard commit and improve as a ballroom dancer and score consistently higher over a little white teenager, who by her own admission from the beginning, who said into the camera during an on camera interview that she just wanted to go home and who according to the judges observations and scores danced the majority of the time like she just didn't care. It is apparent that we are back in the sixties just about the time the Civil Rights walks began and you black teenagers and black twentysomethings who think that racism was back in your parent's and grandparent's day and that racist stuff doesn't apply to you better recognize that racism isn't back in the day it's being applied to you here and right now.

OK, now that the [star] dust has settled on Dancing With The Stars, here's the reason why Brandy, probably the best of the bunch, didn't get to be in the finals: She didn't get enough votes! Yes, Phil, Sharon et al, it's really that simple! Think about it... the system is not flawed.

Honysucklerose, If you think voting Brandy was racism, how do you explain Kyle, and all the other blacks that made it to the finals? Get a life and stop complaining about everything that does not suit you. I'm not saying racism does not exist, but it goes both ways.

Arlene, I agree with you 100%. It's good to see the name Arlene again. That is my late sisters name. Brings back good memories of her.

Brandy should have been in the final three. I don't care what they said. I'll NEVER watch DWS again.

By the way, what good are these comments? Will they be transfered to the DWS people? If not what good are they?

What a boring night of TV last night, Monday. Skating with the stars don't come close to DWTS. Now I can say that I will not watch DWTS again, until they return. I think thats what all the people ment when they say they will never watch the show again. How can they survrve without being able to complain about some dancer because the don't like them or their mothers? Hurry back DWTS........

I'm happy Bristol won! She deserved it.

What I see here is a well put argument for why life is the way it is. Seriously! You're wondering why Bristol beat out Brandi?!? Didn't High School teach you anything?!
Think back to the "glory days"(or for readers who are still in High School, look around). Who got the votes for student body president? The popular jock or cheerleader.
Sure, the band geek or the head of the math club had great ideas that would have actually changed things for the better. But they didn't even come in a close second. Instead, you got another year with a person who spent more time at keggers than reviewing the issues. And although nothing ever changed and the problems never got fixed, they were re-elected the next year. BECAUSE IT'S A POPULARITY CONTEST!!!!!
Same here. True there were rumors that Palin supporters made up false email accounts and voted several times. But that's what our society has gotten itself into. Any forum would have told you that this was possible.
So quit the whining. Brandi lost, WAAAA! Get over it.
YOU made this system possible when you cast your vote in HS for the quarterback because all your friends were doing it too!
