Whoopi Goldberg‘s mother died shortly after suffering a stroke that brought her daughter back home from the London run of “Sister Act,” the performer announced Tuesday morning on the season premiere of “The View.”

Barbara Walters, returning to the show after heart surgery during the break, set Goldberg up to reveal the news that her mother, Emma Johnson, had died Aug. 29.

“My brother and I were very, very lucky to have her in our lives,” Whoopi said. “And so, I’m not sad because she had a great time.... I think I’m just sad sometimes because I think, ‘Who will love me the way that she did?’ But I realized that my brother and I have each other so we’re OK.”

At the time her mother fell ill, Goldberg had been playing Mother Superior in a stage adaptation of her 1992 film.
