Whoopi Goldberg reveals her mother's death on 'The View'

Whoopi-goldberg-bus Whoopi Goldberg's mother died shortly after suffering a stroke that brought her daughter back home from the London run of "Sister Act," the performer announced Tuesday morning on the season premiere of "The View."

Barbara Walters, returning to the show after heart surgery during the break, set Goldberg up to reveal the news that her mother, Emma Johnson, had died Aug. 29.

"My brother and I were very, very lucky to have her in our lives," Whoopi said. "And so, I’m not sad because she had a great time.... I think I’m just sad sometimes because I think, 'Who will love me the way that she did?' But I realized that my brother and I have each other so we’re OK."

At the time her mother fell ill, Goldberg had been playing Mother Superior in a stage adaptation of her 1992 film.

Whoopi, Sorry for your lost. May your mother rest in peace.

Whoopi, so sorry for your loss. I lost my wonderful father nearly 2 years ago and nothing really prepares you for something like this. My thoughts and my prayers are with you and your family. We all love you!

When I heard you tell the viewers on the show this morning that your Mom made her transition on 8/29 I was overwhelmed with sadness. I lost my Mom almost 10 years ago and I still cry sometimes because I miss her so much. I saw you trying to be brave but I know your heart is broken. What really made me feel close to you is when you said, "Nobody will ever love me like she did". Believe it or not, I thought the same thing too and you are right. May GOD be with you and your family.

Sorry for your lost MAY YOUR MOTHER REST IN REST LOVE YA

Whoopi:

I'm sorry to hear about that girl. But you know, they're never really gone as long as you remember them.

Whoopi

So very sorry to hear about you mom. May she rest in PEACE ...and God Bless you and your brother and the rest of your family.

my deepest condolences goes out to whoopi and her bro. i am so sorry for their loss. my grandmother passed away over 2 years ago so i know its difficult. you guys will get through this because you have eachother. shes in a better place watching over you and she is Very proud. may she rest in peace and god bless you.

I love her positive outlook, as I'm sure it's difficult. My deepest prayers and condolences to her and her family.

Whoopie, I heard you speak about you Mom yesterday. You were right, no one ever loves you like that again. My Mom passed away on Valentine's Day 1995. I think about her every day. Shortly after her death, someone gave us a copy of the following. I read it frequently to remind myself just how blessed I was, and am.

"So i am glad not that my loved one is gone
But that the earth she laughed and lived on was my earth too.
That I had known & loved her, & that my love I'd shown -
Tears over departure - nay, a smile
That I walked with her a little while"

Whoopi, I send my blessed wishes to you and family. May your Mom Rest in Peace.

And may Barbara have a blessed recovery and good health in days to come.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I have lost My Mom Dad Grandparents and My brother to cancer thru the years ..I was very young when my Dad passed {4th grade} long story short .. Think positive ,as you are doing ..If your Mom was anything like mine ..she would kick your ever lovin' behind if you didn't keep going strong!!!... Just my thoughts.. Sallie... youngest of 10 ..mother of 3 {married for life to a wonderful man!!}

It is sad to hear of the passing of Whoopi's mother. It is like loosing your best friend, but it was her time. My mother passed September 12, 2001, after suffering a stroke. I viewed her body shortly after she died, and she looked at peace. Now when I see her in my dreams she looks young and healthy (as does my father). They are in a better place, but not that far away.

God Bless Whoopi and her family.

She is right at least she had a mother to love her.... some of us will never know what a mothers' love feels like... It is better to have had .. than to have not had at all....

So sorry about the loss of your mother--Her memory will live on through you and your brother. My sympathy to you and your family.

Whoppi sorry for your loss. May your mother R.I.P.

Sorry to hear about the lost of your mother. Must commend you though for way you are handling it. I lost 4 family members within 7 months of each other and it was a vert difficult time. God Bless you and your family.

Im so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother, i cant imagine what you feel and I realize that either i will experience the loss of a mother one day or she will experience my loss. What gives me joy is that i know outside of the ordinary growing pains we have managed to love and respect each other and now at the age of 42 im grateful that i fell back in love with her before it was too late but who will ever really love you like your mom. I love you Whoopi so therefore I love your mom and will say a prayer for you and rejoice for her life.

One Love!

Whoopi, So sorry for your loss,I too know what it is like to lose your mother, you are so right, there will never be anyone else on earth that can love you like a mother,my prayers are with you and your Brother, but always remember that she will forever be in your heart, and thoughts.May she rest in peace,Love you Whoopi

So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I lost my wonderful mother in January 2007 and not a day goes by without me thinking of her. You are so right - nobody ever loves you like your mom. So sad that kids growing up these days don't seem to understand that. Here is nice verse that might help:

I thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new
I thought about you yesterday
And days before that too
I think of you in silence
I often speak your name
All I have are memories
And a picture in a frame
Your memory is a keepsake
With which I'll never part
God has you in his keeping
I have you in my heart

God Bless.

Whoopi, I am sorry for your loss. My Mom died last year after a 9 month battle with breast cancer and I will agree there is no loss like losing your Mom. I was her only child and she raised me to respect her and later in life she was my best friend. I don't think you ever really get over it, you just get used to it. No love can replace a Mother's love.

W ~ ur love for ur mom sounded so profound when u shared a snip of it with the world on the View... thank u for being so vulnerable and sharing ur news with us. May u continue to hold her memory close in ur heart and mind and rejoice knowing that she is RIP.

May God bless the family

Very sad. Whoopi has a good spirit. It reminds us how important our loved one's are when we realize they can be gone from our lives in an instant. It seems her mother brought her as much love and joy as Whoopi brings to us through her sharing her life with us in the media. Namaste.

So Sad :(

whoopi, sorry for your lost, i lost my mother when i was 12 years old,and i can barely remember her,so remember the good times you had with her along with the principals, values and morals she instilled in you and your siblings.may god bless you and your family and you will be in my prayers.

alice
