Katy Perry on 'Sesame Street' -- see her cleavage for yourself [video] [updated]

When Katy Perry visited "Sesame Street," Elmo didn't seem to mind her cleavage -- but parents who previewed a version of her singing a rewritten "Hot N Cold" while playing tag with the furry red guy begged to differ.

Seems that sheer fabric that goes from neck to, um, places lower than Katy's neck on her "dress-up clothes" won't cut it as a preschool-appropriate outfit, with show producers Sesame Workshop deciding to pull the segment from the kids show's Sept. 27 season premiere.

"Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult.  We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver," the producers said Thursday in a statement.

"We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers.  Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube."

You can see the video for yourself above, or on at Katy Perry's YouTube channel. What do you think -- are you screaming "censorship" or pleased that preschoolers won't be getting that view when they get to "Sesame Street"?

We're guessing Perry's fiancé, Russell Brand,is going to agree with Elmo on this one.

[For the record, 2:16 p.m.: A previous version of this post gave the name of Perry's song incorrectly as  "Hot and Cold." It is "Hot N Cold."]

who picked her wardrobe? while it's not bad, it could have been more appropriate for playing with elmo. someone didn't do their job.

Kids like boobs. C'mon. My son would see Katy Perry and he would think he's on his way to some kind of a Thanksgiving feast.

who's katy perry....?

If I had a young daugher, Katy Perry would not be my choice of role model for her. However kids like what kids like. I think if you put too much emphasis on not watching something, they are going to try their hardest to watch. In otherwords, make a big deal out of it (which what these parents have done) and now they have encouraged their kids to secretly watch it. So Katy Perry has cleavage - so does Miss Piggy who happens to be a puppet in children's movies and shows! There are more important things to protect our children from - Katy Perry's cleavage is not at the top of the list!

we americans are so prudish. breasts are natural and are basically mammary glands. the more we hide it from view, the more unnaturally curious we become. other advanced cultures often see more nudity on tv and there is no problem with that. africans often bare their breasts which also cause no problem. I really don't see any reason why the video should be banned, but i suppose to each his own taste.

Americans are so uptight about nudity and bare breasts in particular. It's an unhealthy obsession. Go to any European or South American beach and nobody really cares about exposed breasts. It's treated as a normal, natural, healthy thing. Isn't that what we should be teaching our children - that breasts are not some secret dirty thing that has to be be hidden, but that they are normal and all women have them, no big deal.

Umm, I think they've probably seen boobs before, lol.

seriously, Katy has nothing to hide...and unless some creep in the room starts goggling any kid young enough to be watching Elmo will not even notice or they'll ask Mom for a sippy cup...without realizing why....

I gotta agree. The dress is very cute, but the cups just don't provide enough coverage. 1.5" of fabric and it would have been fine...but with a lot less press for the premiere of a show that's been on the air for 40 years.

Good Lord. I was expecting something far worse. The dress shows cleavage, yes, but not nipples (not even close). The bodice is tight and close fitting, so there's not even any jiggle. And in Europe, they'd be laughing to think that anyone would get upset about this. (BTW...I don't even like Katy Perry!)

Regardless of her boobs (which are readily apparent), I think the bigger issue is why is Katy Perry on Sesame Street. She is certainly not a person that I would like my nieces and nephews to familiarize themselves with.

I for one would watch it and comment along with my child! "wow, she has nice boobs."

Either Perry had her breasts reduced for the Sesame Street bit, or she has a nice assortment of push-up bras she uses elsewhere because you can't call this "cleavage." As JRC already commented, Miss Piggy's HAS HAD cleavage and nobody complained. What are they going to do? Remove the "G" rating of the Muppet movies on account of that "cleavage?"

I think that Sesame Street Workshop, PBS, CPB, or whoever put together the panel that recommended this lunacy needs to go and check its composition. Does it reflect Americans in general or the born-again/taliban/etc type? That could certainly skew the opinions obtained.

Bottom line: this is too much. Next, Cookie Monster will give up cookies. Wait, hasn't that happened already?

I think it's in poor taste. The costume was age inappropriate as well as some of the screen shots - as when Elmo ran a circle around her and all you see are her thighs in the background.

Who is SS REALLY targeting here - the fathers? Bad idea.

Geez, even SS can't be trusted...

And those of you yahoos who think all Americans are uptight about nudity - you are WRONG. Some of feel there should be strict standards in place on television.

And yea Bob - a lot of men have big breasts too - doesn't mean any of us want to see them!

they should have booted her off the show for being a crappy pop musician. why not bring on a talented musician who's more talented and a better role model? katy perry sucks.

Thanks LA Times for letting us see the banned clip. My kids enjoyed it.

She should have never been allowed to perform for children dressed like that. SHE should have had more sense and definitely if she is tasteless, the producer should have had more sense. Television today is pretty disgusting and Sesame Street is a welcome refuge from overdone sex and violence. Let the kids stay kids awhile. And for those who think otherwise---just watch any other show to get the kicks you want.

Who's Katy Perry?

Not to sound like a member of the disgraceful Focus on the Family, but the wardrobe is too risque.
I consider myself very progressive, but let's keep childhood innocent, even in these (unhealthily) sex-saturated times.
I think "Sesame Street" made the right decision, in this case. Nothing against Perry -- I appreciate her appeal -- just not in this forum.

I'm sure the majority of the moms who complained are simply jealous they can't lose the baby weight and will never come even remotely close to looking like Katy.

Why didn't they just change her outfit? It's a cute song of opposites for the kids. Liberals get over yourselves.

OMG really? Over that? Talk about uptight parents....

Really? This is objectionable? Unbelievable to me that this is an issue, much less that the Sesame Street producers caved on this. The only people that find this offensive are people that are actually looking to TRY to find offensive things in this world. Please, I don't need morality police watching out for me. No child in the world would be harmed by seeing this video. There is absolutely no reason to pull it from the show. Shame on you, Children's Television Workshop, for overreacting to this.
