Why Josh Brolin simply can't be Sean Penn's neighbor

If Sean Penn needs a cup of sugar, he can count Josh Brolin out. Brolin recently revealed he was thisclose to purchasing a home in Los Angeles across the street from Penn's but backed out at the last minute.

Raised in the California ranch community of Paso Robles, Brolin is used to open spaces but was almost lured to the A-list enclaves of L.A.

"I was like, 'I can't pay this amount of money,'" he tells the latest issue of V Man magazine. "You come from a ranch and you're used to space."

He and wife Diane Lane still dwell in Paso Robles and are in the process of purchasing another ranch in the area, which is described as "a strange and alluring mix of prison complexes and wine country."

Sounds as if Penn would enjoy Brolin's 'hood, if you ask us.
