George Michael has been sent to jail. And when he gets out, he can’t drive for five years.

The singer, who in late August pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and possession of marijuana, was sentenced in London on Tuesday to eight weeks in jail and a fine of almost $2,000. He’ll serve four weeks behind bars, then four on parole, the Associated Press reports.

‘It does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what is clearly an addiction to cannabis,’ the judge said. ‘That’s a mistake which puts you and, on this occasion, the public at risk.’

Michael, whose lawyer said he felt ‘profound shame and horror’ over the incident, had been ...

... popped for DUI in 2006 also, getting off that time with 100 hours of community service and two years with a suspended license. This time he wasn’t so lucky. On July 6, the Grammy winner nailed a Snappy Snaps photo-finishing shop with his Range Rover, then got out of his car and waited for police to arrive.

Too bad he wasn’t tooling around in Los Angeles instead of London -- for a while there it was almost easier to crash into a medical marijuana shop than a photo-finishing place, though it has been getting harder lately.

Not to mention, in L.A. an eight-week jail sentence could be served in a matter of days.
