Angelina Jolie visits Pakistan flood victims

Angelina Jolie visited northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, visiting with flood victims, Afghan refugees and aid workers in her role as a U.N. goodwill ambassador, the Voice of America reports. The U.N. is aiming to provide $460 million in aid, but has received only a third of that amount.

Devastating monsoon-season flooding in that country has killed approximately 1,700 people and affected an additional 17 million, according to the BBC. Some estimates put the number of people affected even higher, up to 21 million.

Jolie called the situation “extraordinarily complex,” noting that effects of the flooding were complicated by the presence for years of refugees displaced from Afghanistan.
