'Piranha 3D' producer responds to James Cameron slam

James-cameron-piranha Watch out, James Cameron -- "Piranha 3D" producer Mark Canton is showing his teeth.

After "Avatar" director Cameron slammed the fatal fish movie in a recent interview, Canton issued a response Tuesday via a statement from the film's distributor, the Weinstein Co.

"I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but ['Piranha 3D'] is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the '70s and '80s," Cameron said first.

Canton's not having it.

"Cameron consistently celebrates himself out as though he is a team of one. His comments are ridiculous, self-serving and insulting to those of us who are not caught up in serving his ego and his rhetoric," the producer said.

The response goes on to challenge Cameron to view the film with an audience, just like Canton did on opening weekend with another famous director.

"On opening weekend, I was in a Los Angeles theatre with a number of today’s great filmmakers including J.J. Abrams, who actually had nothing short of the fabulous, fun 3-D experience that the movie provides," Canton said.

See, James? All the cool kids are doing it.

the reason for Cameron's comments concern the fact that he directed Piranha 2 early in his career. Had it not been for the success of Terminator, I'm not sure any of us would know who James Cameron even is. Mr. Cameron, your statements strike me as a little fishy!

I completely agree. Guess what Cameron? It's America! The movie is intended to be fun, I saw it, it was fun. Not a great movie, an entertaining movie. So what?

Hey Freud -
Go read the original article dude, then come back and play.

Cameron repeatedly tells folk (and does so in the article that featured the quote that prefaced this rebuttle) That he was FIRED from Piranha 2 and had nothing to do with the finished product.

it is very common knowledge.

His ego however, is large (and methinks) well deserved having the 2 of the highest grossing films of all time under his belt.

Everyone who is in the know on 3-D in Hollywood recognizes that Camerpn's rig is exceptional and is leaps and bounds above the "retrofitting" of 3-D that Piranha and the like are doing.
