After its buzzworthy Sundance run in January, Lisa Cholodenko‘s ‘The Kids Are All Right’ was spotted as an early awards contender by many critics.

Such hype is exciting for Julianne Moore, who plays one half of the lesbian couple in the film (Annette Bening plays her partner) whose two teenage kids (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) decide to track down their sperm-donor dad (Mark Ruffalo).

On Thursday, Moore gathered in downtown L.A. with the cast (minus Bening, who bowed out for personal reasons) for the film’s premiere, which was the kickoff event at this year’s 10-day L.A. Film Festival. On the red carpet, she said she is heartened by the positive feedback the film has received thus far.

‘You certainly feel the interest, and that’s what you want,’ she told us on the red carpet. ‘You make movies hoping that people are going to enjoy them and go to see them. And this one, certainly, they’re saying, ‘Oh, I want to see it, I want to see it, I want to see it.’ So, yeah, that makes us very glad.’ She added that a festival held in the City of Angels was the perfect place to launch the L.A.-centric film, which was shot largely here.

‘It’s always great to be here. It’s a movie about a family that lives in L.A., so I think this is a very appropriate venue for us,’ she smiled.
