You didn’t have to be an American woman to turn out in style Monday for the Met’s Costume Institute Gala in New York -- but it certainly helped to be famous.

Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lopez, Emma Watson, Jessica Biel, Iman, Sienna Miller, Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker were among the fabulous who came out in New York to support the annual gala -- with its notoriously select social and celebrity guest list on par with the Oscars -- kicking off Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ‘American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity’ exhibition.

Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, Oprah Winfrey and Gap creative director Patrick Robinson hosted the event, at which houses including Rodarte and Thakoon were moonlighting to dress ladies such as Kirsten Dunst and Kerry Washington -- to smashing results.

Other early favorites include SJP in Halston Heritage and Biel in a Grecian Ralph Lauren number. Let’s not forget the muses, either -- like a stunning Brooke Shields in Michael Kors and Oprah herself wearing Oscar de la Renta, both hitting the red carpet with their creators.
