Dixie Carter, the actress who for seven seasons played Julia Sugarbaker on the sitcom ‘Designing Women,’ died Saturday morning in Houston from complications of endometrial cancer.

‘The Edge of Night’ provided her first TV role, and she was still racking up credits in 2009, but Carter is best known for her work with original leads Delta Burke, Annie Potts and Jean Smart, and later Julia Duffy, in ‘Designing Women.’

‘The show was written just for us,’ Carter told the Palm Beach Post in 1999. ‘We all thought we were the prettiest and the funniest.’

‘This has been a terrible blow to our family,’ husband Hal Holbrook said in a written statement. ‘We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy.’
