Ricky Martin comes out: 'Proud' to be a gay man

Ricky martin After more than a decade of speculation, singer Ricky Martin has finally settled the debate on his sexuality -- by acknowledging on Monday he's "proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man."

The "La Vida Loca" hitmaker announced Monday on his official site that in the process of writing a memoir he had confronted some lingering questions (like, say, one that Barbara Walters pressed relentlessly for years ago?).

"At this moment I'm feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share," he writes in his open letter, published in Spanish and English.

Elaborating, Martin felt the has come to share his identity, "especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light .. .to keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where [sic] born with. Enough is enough. This has to change."

Why now, you ask? After his firestorm entrance onto the global music scene, and after withstanding years of queries direct and indirect?

Martin dance "These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within, and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed."

And that truth, once more for the folks in back, is: "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."

Would have had such a great impact had this happened 10-15 years ago but everyone needs to do it their own way and no one goes around coming out as straight!

really? who cares?

When it would have shown real strength to say this early in my career, I stayed silent and safe. I built my career while holding the hands of women in public to continue the charade. Now that I have my millions and can do whatever I want, I take the "brave" step to make this announcement.

The words brave, strong or role-model do not have anything to do with Ricky Martin. Also, who cares.

Damn! it took way too long girrrlll!! Everybody always knew...that trying to be soooo DL didn't help...Well keep living la vida loca child!....now the tabloids and public wants to know who's your boyfriend? Could it be Mario Lopez or Billy Bush???

Please don't age and become a drug addicted mess like George Micheal. PLEASE!

This is amazing! GREAT for HIM! Now, he can focus on being a great entertainer! More power to you Ricky Martin!

I though announcements were intended to tell us something we didn't already know.

No problem. He has the right to live however he chooses to live however his career is over. bye bye Ricky Martin. of course, he has no problem because he got millions now after deceiving the public.

This is so awesome.

I was worried for a while. When all the networks were treating Adam Lambert like crap and no one was standing up for him I thought mankind was going backwards. And then Johnny Weir was getting all kinds of horrible comments (and scores) I thought no one was going to stand up for him but then people like Elton John started saying he was a great role model and mainstream guys like George Lopez and Jay Leno supported him I started to feel better about the whole thing. And now Ricky. This is such great news. I can't even tell you how happy I am about this.

I'm sad for the ladies, because he is hot. GOOD FOR YOU RICKY. We all knew it the whole time and loved you anyway.

He played his straight, romantic role to all the Latinas out there whose cultures are pretty conservative, macho and homophobic--i wonder if they're tearfully pulling his posters down from their bedroom walls?

I'm very proud of Ricky. Keep on being who you are and giving us your gift of great music. You are loved by many. Besos!

Wow, that's a surprise. Didn't see that coming :-)

Hey did you hear that Mark Maguire admitted to taking steroids?

I am a woman and I do not care if he is gay he is a beautiful man!!!
He has that extra something in his looks.

Good for him...but a bit late, don't you think? I'm not gay and can't judge, but a little earlier probably would mean a lot more to the community. Regardless, good for you to come out, even years later.

And in other news, pretzels make you thirsty . . .

Proud? PROUD?! He didn't come out when his career was peaking and still relevant to be a support to others. Now he claims to be proud of something he hid for three and a half decades? Martin is a COWARD -plain and simple. An obvious publicity stunt concocted by some amoral PR flack. Simply loathsome.

He sure was living la vida loca.

So what else is new?

go ricky. im a straight, white, married man w/ three kids, and happy for him for being at peace. good luck ricky.

Wow! We are so shocked Ricky!!! :-*

First Sean Hayes and now you, who knew????

Next we'll have Mel Gibson shocking us by saying he's 'straight'.

Yet another article in the Times about being gay. Really, what is the obsession the Times has with all things gay? Is this even news?

Stop the presses, RICKY MARTIN IS GAY!!!!
I could not see that coming?

When any straight man is asked if he is gay his immediate answer is NO.
