The Times asked 55 movers, shakers and taste makers -- and even a few stars of sports and screen -- to share their favorite flicks from 2009. In line with Oscar speculation, ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Avatar’ are big stars. But there are a few faves in there that the Ministry didn’t expect. If you had to guess the flick picks of RuPaul, Matt Kemp, Chris Matthews and Monique Lhuillier, could you do it? Hint: The answers are ‘(500) Days of Summer,’ ‘Law Abiding Citizen,’ ‘It’s Complicated’ and ‘Up’ -- but not necessarily in that order.

From a clothing designer, about ‘Avatar: ‘I was so inspired that I even had my dog painted with stripes and began calling him O-vatar instead of Oliver!’

From an author, about ‘Precious’: ‘If the essence of intelligence is the ability to hold contradictory ideas at the same time, then Mo’Nique gets the genius award: It was like watching a poet scribble 14 different, yet simultaneous, lines of doom.’

Not gonna tell you who said this last one, or which movie it’s about: ‘[That movie] ain’t nominated for no Oscar. I know that! That’s my favorite movie. Man, that was my movie of the year.’ It came from No. 22 on the list, however.

Don’t be shy -- share your top movie, and why you liked it best, in the comments below.

P.S. Even Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa weighed in. He’s No. 16.

A new Times database puts readers on the sidewalks of Hollywood, using more than a century of archives to track the lives of the stars, including current Oscar nominees Jeff Bridges, James Cameron, Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman, Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep.
