Robert Pattinson shares a few freewheeling details -- you listening, John Mayer?

Rpattinson In the March issue of Details magazine, cover boy Robert Pattinson steps right up to what could've been the edge of John Mayer territory -- then cleverly walks away from that line, demonstrating that it's possible to discuss lady parts, man parts, porn and more without ending up thrown to the media wolves.

One tip: Don't run your mouth for years in advance like some sort of new-age, "meta-aware," cooler-than-all-of-us Twitter prophet.

Some other takeaway guidelines we gleaned from reading the interview:

-- If you say you want to snort something, let it be wasabi peas, not Jessica Simpson.

-- If someone's going to use an old-fangled word for black people, let it be the interviewer, not you.

-- It's OK to mention your man parts as long as you don't ascribe political beliefs to them.

-- If you're going to discuss porn, discuss the quaintness of '80s porn compared with the no-holds-barred smut fest that's available now, rather than relishing the fact that you can see 300 anonymous private parts online before you get out of bed in the morning.

-- If you're going to admit that sudden fame (and the attendant gabillions of interviews that come with something like "The Twilight Saga") gave you a  sense that you had "a responsibility to be fascinating," rather than attempting to be fascinating for fascinating's sake -- or as some would say, embarking on a  "quest to be clever" -- draw a parallel to an interest you once had in becoming a political speech writer. Which is sort of fascinating.

-- If you in the past possessed mad confidence, and admit to it, show that you now realize some folks might know more about some things (say, your career choices) than you might: "[Y]ou have to figure out whether the way you think at 19 or 20 has any value. And eventually I understood, with all that control, which was probably illusory, I wasn't progressing. So now I'm relinquishing a bit."

-- Tell endearing stories about experiences with elephants.

-- Talk about how much you love your dog.

-- And, finally, don't kiss and tell.

"As an actor," he tells the magazine, "you can elevate the human condition or cheapen it. I would assume it's the same with anything you do -- you try to elevate and maybe someday you will."

Pattinson's Details interview is geared to adults -- we'll link you to the one page without an f-bomb -- but it's an interesting read.

And now we know that elephants purr.

Rob Pattinson is very intelligent and clever. It's never been more obvious than in this Details interview. He's also never looked more gorgeous. Sigh....

Finally, a reputable blog that "gets" Robert's Details interview. A lot of comments on other blogs have been trashing Rob because of this article, but I really hope people give him another chance because he's got a ton of untapped talent, a good heart, intelligence and total sex appeal.

Thank you for this fair analysis of this really hilarious and yet indepth interview.

So many just want to sensationalize his words and create controversy over nothing.

He's intelligent and eloquent.

Great read thanks ! Interesting guy, it proves you can be an intelligent deep thinker without needing to force it in people's faces. Loved the elephant story, too cute.

What a great interview, entertaining and thought-provoking. Loved it!

Thank you for an excellent review of Pattinson’s Details interview. Lesser bloggers and “journalists” are using this for cheap hits. Pattinson’s interviews are always a joy to read, for such a young man he is intelligent, perceptive and hilarious with his outlook on life. A rarity in today’s “young Hollywood”. I look forward to more of his comments and insights as his career progresses.

Finally. One site that understood the interview. I loved it. Once again, Rob let us in on his thoughts of life and his own struggles getting into adulthood. It showed the life on this young actor and how he is managing all the madness surrounding him. He is funny, quirky and as any guy next door dealing with his everyday dilemma. Keep up the good work Rob.

Thank you for this article. It's great to see you saw what we his fans have seen all along. He isn't typical young Hollywood. The DETAILS interview was one of his best thus far.

Yes, thank goodness some publication is showing an intelligent response to this interview.

LA Times has taken the high road, where so many others picked out a few phrases they thought could be inflammatory and made negative or dubious remarks-- undoubtedly in a simple quest for hits.

My faith in journalism hasn't quite died yet-- thank you!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Details interview - had me laughing out loud, as well as realizing Rob is not only mature and introspective beyond his years, but also clever, imaginative and humble at the same time. Thank you Christie -- you're right, though -- it is an interview for adults... as is your column. loved your close.

So pleased to see your review of Rob Pattinson's Details article. You folks get it, and get him. An intelligent guy who's just a blast to listen to, it's so much fun to be his fan and watch him as he starts a really big career in the movies. He's a grown up, talented, funny, engaging young man, nothing like the limited Edward character he plays in Twilight. Long time fans of his are so pleased to see others discovering what a special young man he is. Your article willl help introduce others to him. Thanks for the intelligent review of his interview!

Thank you, you're like the only site that actually gets Rob and this interview, the rest doesn't even try...plus you're not trying to put him in a bad light by taking his quotes out of context and putting a new spin on them.

Rob's Details interview was an entertaining, enlightening, and thought provoking read. Fascinating man with a mind and personality as incredible as his amazing good looks. Hats off to the LA Times for recognizing how great this interview was and for *getting* Rob!

Thank you so much for your analysis. Couldn't agree more with everything you said. This interview makes him more endearing than ever and, hopefully, will broaden his appeal to new audiences.

Thank you for sharing your perspective on the Details article. I agree with you 100%. People can choose to debate the meaning or interpretation of this article forever and they will end up seeing only what they want to see. But at the end of the day, Rob is Rob and he is a good person trying to steer his way through his newfound super-stardom. I am sure he will be dodging many bullet, like this, along the way.
Robert Pattinson is the best thing to happen to Hollywood in a long time. He is intelligent, genuine, clever, unassuming, charming, and talented. It amazes me that he is only 23 years old. I expect amazing things from this beautiful, young man. From the looks of things he has a very bright future ahead of him.

Thank you for a fair review of Rob's interview and actually reading it. Not only he is gorgeous, but he is also intelligent, well read, articulate and funny and quirky. I hope he will be around for many years to come, we need him, he is a beacon of light. He is fascinating.

Thank you for this logical article! Robert Pattinson's photo shoot, cover, and interview were all great. He's very intellegent, and witty. Looking forward to Remember Me =)

alas a journalist who can read :)

Thank you! I thought the details interview was great and couldn't understand the crazy comments/psudo analysis that followed.

Thank you for an intelligent blog about this interview. Some of the comments on this interview have shown just how immature and uneducated media outlets and their followers are.

With what I've seen across the 'net, I figured I was settling down with a John Mayer-like celebrity implosion.

Couldn't be farther from the truth. The interview was interesting an laugh-out-loud funny in places, and I found myself kind of liking the guy, even though I am seething in jealousy about his life.

At least he recognizes that he's the luckiest guy on the planet.

That was almost as brilliant as Rob's interview!!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you. Christie you really do get it don't you. Rob is brilliant, so much smarter than the normal guy!!! Love him!! Thank you again.
I never knew elephants purred!

Robert Pattinson always has the last laugh.

Finally someone actually gets it. Thank you so much for this great write-up. You read the interview and interpreted it objectively unlike the other so-called journalists out there who take his words out of context just to get hits. His details interview is one of the best he's given since he shot to fame so thank you once again for giving it a clear open-minded review.

You Rob worshippers are pathetic and are like sheep. I don't find comments where you're calling women Vaginas funny at all. And I'm sorry, but this guy is self absorbed and extremely shallow. He couldn't put in a good word for his family? At least John Mayer can excuse his tactless comments with talent. This young and naive bit has yet to prove he can actually act and not just sell seats at the box office. He's an overrated and immature celebrity, not actor.
