Mariska Hargitay, best known for her tough-detective role on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,’ is doing her part off-screen to help stop violence against women.

The Department of Justice Officials is in the midst of a four-day STOP conference in San Francisco, with about 300 representatives across every state government in the country. Hargitay and the group are participating in a dialogue about federal resources for females affected by abuse.

The actress is a longtime advocate and founder of sexual and domestic abuse organization Joyful Heart Foundation.

‘I have seen survivors find their way back to lives of possibility, hope and joy, and I am so proud to be part of a movement that will change the way we talk about and behave around these epidemics,’ Hargitay said in a statement.

The Emmy winner is the daughter of screen icon Jayne Mansfield and former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay. She also lends her time to the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence intervention program, when not tending to her little boy, August.
