PREACH IT! John Mayer stops tweeting, leaves us all alone with Tila Tequila
We here at the Ministry could dedicate this post to how offensive, just offensive, the whole John Mayer Twitter debacle has been. That Playboy interview! Airing his dirty laundry like that! Speaking in such ribald language about the ladies! Using the N word!
We could pull a CNN -- call up some talking heads and hold a marginally responsible debate on whether Mayer has some sort of blurting condition. Or we could pull a Fox News. You know, call in a different assortment of heads and discuss whether Mayer’s behavior is indicative of general Moral Backsliding in America.
But those approaches, though occasionally amusing -- always fun to see how far Bill O’Reilly can make his face retreat into his own neck -- would also be dishonest.
For most people -- especially us -- watching rich people talk themselves into a hole isn’t tragic. It’s not an outrage. It’s not Cause for Concern.
It’s fun.
In fact, there’s only one thing more entertaining than watching a pompous celebrity meltdown on Twitter, and that’s the implosion of self-pity that happens afterward. For Mayer, that Phase II has begun.
Confirmation first arrived Wednesday night. By that point, Mayer had already posted an apology on Twitter related to the Playboy interview. It was pretty good, as celebrity apologies go. But at a live show in Nashville that night, he broke down, according to a report by E! News.
"I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done," a teary Mayer told the audience at the Sommet Center. "I just want to play my guitar."
For now, Mayer appears to be serious. His Twitter account has been silent for the last two days. Guess we’ll have to get our schadenfreude somewhere else.
Wonder what Tila Tequila’s doing ...
-- Leslie Gornstein
P.S. Video of his apology is below, though the sound quality gets a bit unbearable when the four-minute apology ends and the blues guitar kicks in.

Who cares what Mayer did... What concerns me more is that people might actually mistake Tila Tequila as a "role model."

It was expected that some famous person would get caught in his own inability to express himself or his attempts to blog too much information while high on drugs or drunk. If you work in an office you know your emails should be crafted carefully, in response to any question so they don't come back to hurt you in the future. Unless it is your boss an office email can be left unanswered, noreply. This media stuff gets you in trouble. Never open your heart up in a twit or blog. It is not the place to get psycho help. Joh is sorry you let the world know he is sad, rich and famous. By the way I never read statement John made about the N- word. He expressed a fact that he is loved by Blacks, but to black women he is about as attractive, interesting, as a white supremacist. It may have some connection in his mind to his penis, if I read it correctly.

Is this a 'males only' forum? [just making sure] Cause I am one of those black women covered in Charles' sweeping generalization which prompted this comment. First of all, I find John Mayer very attractive. I find his humor one that should be spoken over a poker game without females present but his music excellent and his voice sexy although his articulation isn't always attractive.
In short, many men hoped and wished that so many women weren't attracted to John Mayer because he gets away with what you could never.
*I don't know a damn thing about this Tequila person other than the fact that she is a lesbian. So to include her in this post is just asinine and threadbare as one of the constant uncalled for digs John has endured for the entirety of his career. You vultures aren't happy until the next DJ AM or Michael Jackson.

Theyre all train wrecks in the making.......

Yay. I hope he keeps his mouth shout.

You think he is the only one saying words like that, or even thinking that. Hollywood is no place for people who believe in equality. I have lived and worked there. I used to hear the N word all the time by big time execs and producers. Any studio...you name it...I've heard some comments from people in high places that would make your head spin off and leave you wondering if it ain't the 1960's in Arkansas. Guess what? It just might be to them so don't think all is well in LA LA LAND. Say it ain't so Joe!
Guess again. (and if you are a woman, whoa...you really got it tough)

This should just be a lesson to us all: an emo pretty-boy simply should NOT play the blues. Maybe Coldplay has a role for him...
Posted by: Matthew | Feb 12, 2010 at 10:38 PM
Well, perhaps it's wise for Mayer and other loose lipped trash talking celebrities to remain silent until they learn how to think before they speak, and they learn how to speak of all people, including us Black women with the dignity and basic respect we all deserve as human beings. Frankly, I doubt his sincerity, I think he is pretty much doing the ole "taking his ball and going home."

What garbage. Teary little monologue over an intro.
Who does he think he is, Elvis?
How fake can one person be.

after claiming black women are not worthy of his sexual favors, he proceeds to tearfully apologize and then entertain his crowd with a musical stylization that is attributed to their culture.
the irony of this dichotomy is only surpassed by it's shallowness.
as a life long fan of music i find his riffing amateurish, and his "con"fession of his latest blues the single most Lilly white pasty faced bluesmanship i have ever witnessed.
John Mayer should quit playing the blues because he doesn't have the spirit to do so. he will never know of its sorrow, or its joy.

I'm not gonna defend John Mayer...all right, maybe I am a little bit. He used the "N" word and it's a 100% fact he shouldn't have and I won't defend that he did...but the next time you hear it in a rap song tossed off casually and nonchalant, just remember your criticism. This is a guy who grew up in the modern age when that word is tossed around almost as often as the word "cheese." Cut the guy some slack. He's not a racist and everyone who has a brain knows it. He got caught up in an interview and the interviewer and the publication (especially Playboy) of course was gonna print it. Racism among the younger generation in this country is not a problem, and yes, I'm white and I have friends that use the word who are not racist at all...politics and media are the things that are drowning us and the things that need to be corrected in the near future and my hope is that our attention is turned to the extreme political correctness and irresponsible reporting that is a plague, rather than worrying about some random celebrity and a slip of the tongue.

Mayer is the crass, racist, sexist dweeb he admits to being. And his useless music is shopping mall quality. Yet, I'm glad he emptied his ugly, sour head for the world to see. Remember this the next time he lectures us as to who to vote for in an election.

Will some gutsy rock guitar players join me in finally saying John Mayer (and Slash and Neil Young and Joe Perry etc) is a crap guitarist and a twit. This guy's suffering blowback from drinking his own koolaid! He's not that big a deal. He's really not a strong talent. He's been propped up and now one of the sticks have come upscrewed that hold him up. It's like he was invented for the SaturdayNightLive Pod People! If you think Adam Sandler's funny, then John Mayer is a guitar god.
Yuck.

If he were my grandson,,, i'd take a broom to his bottom and soap to his mouth... something his Mom should have done long ago...what a creep... A man,,, not on your life,,, not sure he will ever be one either.

"...I'm white and I have friends that use the word who are not racist at all."
Then what are they? Anyone with a modicum of intelligence who knows the vicious history of the N word--be it Black or white--wouldn't even have it in their lexicon out of respect for those who were lynched, beaten and segregated because of it.
Posted by: Diane | Feb 13, 2010 at 09:26 AM
Jeanine Cartwright the problem with Mayer using the N-word as a white person, is it fulls further racism among actual racist people.
And who ever said Mayer's generation doesn't have a problem with racism... are you living under a rock? From a world wide poll the U.S was rated in the top 5 as the most racist country in the world. Racism is alive, and always will be. So to say that comment, totally erases any sense you made.
Mayer is a moron, and acts like a moron. Maybe one day he'll grow up and act like an adult.

Sadly, no one was really listening to John. They just heard the "N" word and that blew the whole story. The POINT of the N word was to emphasize the purely racist context of the question he was asked concerning a "hood pass". How ANY racist comment can be PC is beyond me (and apparently John, too) but "hood pass" got a pass that John wasn't willing to leave alone so he was just pointing out that RACISM can NEVER be PC. The comment about his sexual preference (or lack thereof) would never have been an issue if he had said he ONLY wanted Asian or Hispanic or Black women so why is it an issue if he only wants white women? Geez...... Elton John can say he only wants GUYS and nobody disses him for that so..... try to keep it in context. If you can, you will find that John doesn't have a racist bone in his body but he does have a, sometimes crippling, propensity for the truth.
