Report: Howard Stern tapped to replace Simon Cowell on 'American Idol'

Howard stern idolShock jock Howard Stern has been offered Simon Cowell's seat on the "American Idol" dais, a new report says.

The New York Post's Page Six claims that Stern is in negotiations to replace the critical Brit in 2011 when his Sirius XM contract expires. He's hinted at mulling the gig on several occasions on air.

"It's one of the few shows that could compete with Stern's $100-million-a-year Sirius contract, and 'Idol' bosses think he'd be even nastier than Simon," an "Idol" source tells the Post.

Compete it might, but whispers in Stern's camp say he's not thrilled about touring the country auditioning talent, nor is he excited about the amount of time he'd spend in Los Angeles for performance and result shows.

"I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year -- and I did turn it down ... I'm not even sure if I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens," Stern recently said on his show.

This doesn't mean the Fox ratings juggernaut is ready to give up.

"They know he would be great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants. 'Idol' will do what it takes to sign him," the show source added.

A Stern source echoed to Page Six the belief that "this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract. But if Sirius can't pay him the money he wants, he may negotiate to film 'Idol' on the side."

Stern would join newly tapped daytime queen DeGeneres, songwriter Kara DioGuardi and producer Randy Jackson

Would you watch Howard on "Idol"? Would he make a worthy successor for Simon? Tell us in comments.

Howard is above that crap Idol. If he actually did join the show (please don't Howard) then the rating would SOAR and Fox knows it. And anyone that doesn't like Howard it is because they don't listen to him--he is a amazing!

Hate the show but would watch it if Stern was on!

It would quickly devolve into a debate between DeGeneres and Stern about lesbianism. Stern's infantile infatuation with lesbianism on his show can be quite entertaining, but I doubt DeGeneres will want to share the dais with him.

It's funny that people say he's a no talent, but those same people probably don't realize that he did the exact same show when he was on the radio in detroit in the early 80's. He had recording executives come in and judge listeners who would compete for recording contracts.
And whether or not you think he has talent or not, at least he has an opinion. And like Mike said, I don't think it's a stretch to say that he's the only way the show could keep bringing in new viewers. He brought sirius from like 500,000 subscribers to around 20 million and a merger with XM in under 5 years. Name another celebrity that anyone would pay to follow like him. Here's a hint... there isn't one.

This is a huge mistake! My husband and I will stop watching.

Stern would rock as a judge who pulls no punches.

Howard is a great talent. Just because some of you don't like his personality can't knock him on talent. He didn't get to be the biggest thing in radio, have a movie made about him, and write best sellers if he didn't have any talent.

Hell yes

I mean, hell yes I would watch. Anyone who claims he has no talent is unfamiliar with his work. If you like AI now, you will still check it out out of curiosity, and you'll most likely recant your assessment.

I swear, if he goes through with this the nail in the coffin is finally driven. Irregardless of a return to terrestrial radio.

howard sucks.

I may be one of the few people in the country to have never watched this mindless show. On the other hand I might tune in for 1 episode to see Howard.

I will never watch again. Please pick anyone else but him

Howard Stern is a brilliant choice. He's smart, he's logical and he's never just mean for the sake of being mean. He may be painted in a corner because all people know about are the wild antics or salacious stories about his radio show, but if you listen to his show - as I do - you know he is intelligent, thoughtful, and has great insight into a variety of topics from pop culture to history to politics. AI would not lose viewers, even people that don't like him would tune in to see a man they'd love to hate!

I am not a fan of Idol - or any reality TV for that matter - but if Howard were on I may actually tune in. The man is honest, genuine, and funny, and his so-called 'shock-jock reputation' is as out of date as the Reagan era.

To those that think that Howard Stern is not smart and funny is to think that the sun does not shine on a sunny day.

He is a genius, the man would not only bring this show to a new level but it would be the best TV on TV point blank.

Even the haters would end up watching it trust me!!!

You have got to be kidding me!?! He is so over the top profane and vulgar, there is no way I will watch AI if he is a judge.

It would be terrible to have him on the show. AI is one of the last few shows that you can still watch with your whole family and not have to worry about wildly inappropriate content. He will simply ruin it. Stern will turn the show into a raunchy joke by talking about farts, menstrual cycles, slapping hookers with dead fish, or some other offensive material.

Stern comes aboard and that's the last time I tune into Idol. Further,as contestants if Stern is in, then I hope you'll have enough sense to walk away from the show. Eh gads this thought just makes my skin crawl....

No-no-no-no! What a mistake. This man does not have any talent. Rude, yes! But, he's rude just to be rude. He would add nothing. I've watched AI since Season 1 and would blow it off if HS became a judge.

You know I invented talent shows Robin. Hoohoo!

This is crazy! I can say with certainty I will not continue to watch the show with Stern as a judge. Im sure many more will agree.

Hell YEAH I would watch it in a heartbeat!! Finally someone who is worthy of my attention on a now so bland tv show. It's so dull and boring I just can't watch anymore, but HOWARD STERN! Yes- yes - yes PLEASE!!!

Howard would be great. All of you Stern haters, he is a smart guy and obviously would not be his radio personality on AI. There are 2 Howards the radio guy and the guy off air. As far as knowledge of singing he has been a radio DJ for 40+ years which is more than I can say for Ellen. Most of you people are very naive to believe the Stern of radio is the same one he is in real life. He has raised 3 daughters, very close to his parents and has a very healthy married life. Wake up!
The show is an act

I've been trying to kick the Idol habit for a few years now, getting Stern on board is just what I need to finally give up the show for good.

I had thought that Alice Cooper would make a good judge, beacuse he has some industry talent, and he is more articulate than Stern and his humor is a little kinder and has broader appeal than Stern's humor (porn and scatalogical)
