Report: Howard Stern tapped to replace Simon Cowell on 'American Idol'

Howard stern idolShock jock Howard Stern has been offered Simon Cowell's seat on the "American Idol" dais, a new report says.

The New York Post's Page Six claims that Stern is in negotiations to replace the critical Brit in 2011 when his Sirius XM contract expires. He's hinted at mulling the gig on several occasions on air.

"It's one of the few shows that could compete with Stern's $100-million-a-year Sirius contract, and 'Idol' bosses think he'd be even nastier than Simon," an "Idol" source tells the Post.

Compete it might, but whispers in Stern's camp say he's not thrilled about touring the country auditioning talent, nor is he excited about the amount of time he'd spend in Los Angeles for performance and result shows.

"I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year -- and I did turn it down ... I'm not even sure if I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens," Stern recently said on his show.

This doesn't mean the Fox ratings juggernaut is ready to give up.

"They know he would be great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants. 'Idol' will do what it takes to sign him," the show source added.

A Stern source echoed to Page Six the belief that "this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract. But if Sirius can't pay him the money he wants, he may negotiate to film 'Idol' on the side."

Stern would join newly tapped daytime queen DeGeneres, songwriter Kara DioGuardi and producer Randy Jackson

Would you watch Howard on "Idol"? Would he make a worthy successor for Simon? Tell us in comments.

American Idol will lose many viewers! To put Howard Stern on AI would be the worse mistake in any televisions shows history! The man has no talents!

Ok, I decided to continue watching the show when Paula was replaced by Ellen but this is too far.

Only he - could keep and bring additional viewers. Look what he did for the dying satelite radio industry.

No, no, no. He is like fingernails on a chalkboard to alot of us. What does he know about singing anyway. I'll be gone if they do this and I have watched every season.

Stern's a pig and would be a bad move--make it too nasty and crass for mainstream America. Cowell is likable--Stern is very much not. But Fox is king of crass so I guess I'm not that surprised they'd be that dumb.

If Fox and American Idol replace Simon Cowell with Howard Stern, that will be the last Idol show I will watch. I haven't missed even one show since the last week of year #1.

I can't imagine a better addition than Howard Stern. He'll be frank, interesting, and entertaining.

This would be the best thing to ever happen to Idol!! Too bad Stern can't leave New York.

Howard would be a great replacement, He's honest, smart, up front and funny to boot. It would be hysterical and historical!

I would absolutely stop watching American Idol if he joins. I have watched every season. Hopefully, this would not be my last.

Linda

Adding Howard Stern to American Idol would be the only thing that would make me WATCH the show. All you haters would watch too, just to see the sparks fly. Everyone supposedly hated Simon but you all watched regardless because he was interesting. Howard would make the show exciting and give it a new twist.

Best idea I've heard for this show! I say do it! Simon has gone soft anyway...

Not a chance in hell that Howard would such a thing, He hates coming out of his house let alone travel or be in LA. He had the chance to be the last guest on Conan and turned it down and he hates Leno which would have been perfect to have Howard lay out his hatred towards Leno. All he wants to the have sex with Beth and watch TV.

Howard Stern being a judge on that show is possibly the only thing that MIGHT convince me to watch that garbage.

This would be great, Stern had a form of American Idol when he was in DC I think. People who put him down do not actually listen to him, they hear the rumors but they are not true.

You know this show is huge with families and kids. Won't it be great for Stern to start commenting on contestants "racks."

"Hey Daddy, what's a rack? Is that a good one? Does mommy have one."

Brilliant idea - you sure this didn't come out of NBC?

I have never commented on one of these boards. But with the possibility of Howard Stern becoming a judge on AI, I felt that I must write to voice my opinion.

I will never watch the show again. He is a toxic personality. If I am in a taxi and the driver has him on the radio I ask the driver to change the station. If the driver refuses, I exit the cab. Howard Stern as a judge? I don't think so.

never watched the show, never will....unless stern is on

I listen to Howard on SiriusXM, and when he is serious he is a very good interviewer and very smart. He would make a a good addition, however, being that his career is not in music it does not make sense to have him as a judge. The same goes for DeGeneres

HECK YEAH!!!! I would watch with Stern.

I would quit watching if Howard Stern was the replacement!

What is the world coming to? If Fox is seriously considering that idiott, then Fox has stooped to the lowest of all lows!

I would quit watching American Idol because Stern is a big fat joke. Even tho Simon can be mean, he is in the music business and knows his stuff. Plus he quite lovely to look at. And Stern? Having to look at the ugly face for one hour each week would leave me quite nauseated. Also, what qualifications does Stern have except acting like the creep that he is.

Forget it. If he is a judge, I will no longer be watching the show, no more tivo.... I can find something better to do with my time. I will be sure to tell all my friends and family - to shine it on...

I can see this now. "Sorry honey you don't have quite what we are looking for in this show, but please take off your top." I don't think this one works, Idol. This is the beginning of the end.

I think he would be a great addition to the show...Great idea. He will be awesome
