'Deadliest Catch' son Jake Harris arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUI, hit and run

Catch trio Jake Harris, the younger son of the late captain Phil Harris of "Deadliest Catch" fame, was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license, plus suspicion of involvement in a hit-and-run a few hours earlier.

The 24-year-old was pulled over on Interstate 5 near downtown Seattle about 9 p.m. and arrested after failing a field sobriety test, according to Washington State Trooper Dan McDonald. Troopers learned that a car matching the description of Harris' BMW had rear-ended another vehicle on I-5 about four hours earlier and that its driver had fled the scene, he said.

A family spokesman confirmed the arrest but told KIRO-TV in Seattle that Jake wasn't intoxicated and hadn't been in an accident.

Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie, died Feb. 9 after suffering a stroke in January. In comments on this blog, the outpouring of love and support for Jake and his brother Josh Harris in the wake of their dad's death was truly touching. Both sons work as deckhands on the show, though immediately after his father's stroke Josh had stayed aboard, awaiting the arrival of another captain.

"The boys are holding up as much as possible," executive producer Thom Beers told Show Tracker in an  interview published this morning about the "Deadliest Catch" marathon that Discovery will air Sunday.

"It’s been tough. They’re a little rudderless right now. [Phil] ran that ship, and now they’re having to deal with it themselves. The question now is whether the boys will continue to follow in the footsteps and what their plans are. That’s what the off-season is going to be -- they’ll have to figure it out and we’ll be there to support them whatever they decide."

After being jailed Thursday night, Jake Harris appeared in court Friday morning with an attorney. KIRO reports that bail was set at $2,000; TMZ says it's $1,500.

People magazine reported today on Jake's expressions of grief at a Feb. 13 memorial for his dad -- an event where "a lot of buddies" could honor his life, held at a local casino that was one of Phil's favorites.

"We didn't want to make it really sad," Jake said.

SO WHAT

I just wanted to send out my deepest condolces to the Harris Family. I am a big fan of Deadliest Catch since it started. The loss of Captain Phil Harris is a hurtful one especially for Josh and Jake. With time all wounds will heal, not completely but they will heal. Josh and Jake, keep your heads up, do the right thing and think about it before you make a decision. From what I saw on television, your father loved, cared and trusted you both. Not to worry, you'll know what to do next. God Bless you all and your family.

Sincerely,
SGT Robles, Jr. Monseis

Jake Harris, first and foremost, I am sorry truely sorry for your loss. I have no idea on what happen with this DUI but Jake, you still have to honor your father and do the right things. God knows I am not perfect but I try to live my life the way He wanted me too. Jake, I could not even attempt to say that I know what you are going through, cause I have not lost my father, but I have lost my fellow comrades in Iraq. Keep your head up and you will be ok. It will take some time but you'll get through it. Just remember, it does not make you lesser of a man to ask for help, it makes you more of a man to admit you need help. Good luck to you Jake.

Sincerely,
SGT Robles, Jr. Monseis

KEEP YOUR HEAD UP IT'S GOING TO BE A TOUGH ROAD BUT YOU'LL MAKE IT I'M SOORY FOR YOUR LOST I LIKED WATCHING YOU AND YOUR FATHER ON THE SHOW.

The loss of our loved ones is never easy. We miss them, and some of our grieving is more for us, for what we've lost in seeing them daily. I recently lost my only child Michael in November, and I am still greiving. It takes time. Give yourself permission to cry, scream if you need to. If all that doesnt help, then you can talk to a Dr. There is no shame in asking for counceling. Only strong people know when they truely need to ask for that help. Do not let the loss of your Dad derail your life and consume you. Honor your Dad in all you do. Be a good man, good husband, good father, and then that honor will be the best gift you could give him.

It is hard on a person to have a family member died I know lost my parents in death. life go on and you miss them every day. you will look back and remember with love. hang in there Josh and Jake you have people who care.

C.J

My condolences go out to the Harris family,STAY STRONG GUYS! Go wherever your heart and mind take you.You all know that Capt. Phil Harris only wanted the best for his sons and crew that were like family to him too. GOD BLESS
