Report: Artie Lange attempted suicide by stabbing himself
A violent suicide attempt is what landed Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange in the hospital over the weekend, the New York Post reports.
His mother, Judy Lange, who was dropping off food, found him bloody in his Hoboken, N.J., apartment Saturday morning and called 911, sources told the Post's Page 6. Despite Lange's heavy bleeding from nine self-inflicted wounds -- six "hesitation" cuts and three deep -- surgeons were able to save him.
On Monday, Stern did not discuss details of Lange's hospitalization -- respecting the family's wishes -- reminding listeners of his contributions and setting listeners straight on an Internet rumor that the 42-year-old was off the show.
Sad situation; we wish Artie and his family the best.

Artie, lets talk.
Posted by: nemo | Jan 07, 2010 at 09:07 AM
howard should have addressed this in a mature matter. and just let the audience know. he's changed so much. before he used to tell teh audience everything, i'm not saying he needs to goof on artie, but he's forgetting that millions of people care and listen to the show for teh whole staff. we needed to know on monday that artie was not ok and howard just brushed it off. that's the third time in recent weeks howard has been secretive. before the break he ended the show early cuz he had to do something he did not want to, and he didnt reveal wat it was. and then ralph did something on new year's and howard also didnt want to talk about that. howard you're forgetting you get paid to talk and we love you because you are so open about eveyrthing. stop closing up. is it beth that's making you act this way? i'm sure that if howard were to divorce he would not talk about it on the air, where before he was so open about everything with his divorce with alison. howard talk to us. it's radio. we're listening. we dont care about medicated pete. what do you think about artie? you dont have to goof on it or make it a bit, but we want to know what u and robin and fred are thinking. dont abandon your audience.... you are beginning to.

Sorry to hear about Artie...I think he is one of the funniest guys around. He and Howard make a great pair. Artie, whatever is troubling you....please get help...life can be so exciting...try to enjoy it. You have so many assets to contribute to the people, don't give up. there are some great meds out there that can help you. If you had a sore throat you would most likely go to a dr. and get some meds to get well, apply this some idea to your mental anquish....get some help...NOW!
We need you Artie, so please hang around for awhile longer...like til you're 90. I bet you will still be funny even then. Nothing is so bad that you can't fix it...hop on board the wagon to get well. Sincerely, Barb Kolterman

Artie, now that's NOT funny......stop the self destruction, you are so worth more than that fate at your own hands. I'm praying for you. Now get your butt back on the Stern show and make us all laugh again.

Bella - I think you are completely off base here. Howard was respecting the wishes of Artie's family. This is a horrible story and I think Howard did the right thing here. I know we all love the show because of the honesty, but Howard is not obligated to tell us everything in his life or everything he knows. I for one am proud of the way he handled this matter.

Artie, Think about your pops man he wouldn't want you to take this way out, Reset and get back to work. We miss you on the show Big Dogg.

Amazing, Howard belittles and cracks jokes about others that have attempted and some that have succeeded to commit suicide, but when it's one of his own, we are supposed to "respect the family." What a hypocrite. Radio's biggest phoney, Howard Stern.

As a mother who lost her son to suicide, I urge Artie to find help and search his soul for a better solution. Not only for himself, but for all of those who love and care about him. No mother should know the traumatic grief of losing her son this way.
My prayers are with you Artie and your family.

I agree with Nemo! Listening to Howard has been like living his life with him. The honesty is what makes him unique and keeps you involved. But he seems to be backing up and out lately. Since he is only 55 I would hope that he would continue for at least another 10 years. I would personally miss listening to him every day. However, he will probably do as always and tell us everything that transpired and that is on his mind when it is over. I don't know why but for some reason I just love that show.

This is as bad as it gets. Artie has way to much going for him. Hot Girlfriend, Nice houses, career, family. I know Artie's got to do what Artie's got to do, but he needs a full time sitter for awhile. Adriane, where are you.

this doesn't suprise me if it's true...I've listened to howard since he left CBS, but, if he's avoiding talknig about it, yeah, hypocrite

Just goes to show that all the material success in the world means nothing. This man is suffering terribly. I hope he finds some measure of peace in his heart, and can learn to enjoy life.

My thoughts and prayers are with U artie.. get well..we miss you.. Know that millions of people are pulling for you to make it through :D
As for Howard and his coments about NOT discussing it and respecting the familys wishes.. I can Stand by that comment 100% especially during this trying time trying to get Artie better and back to his funny man self!
Love from Canada :D

Howard didn't talk about Artie's hospitalization to respect the wishes of Artie's family.

So far, the only "source" for this story is a report from Page Six... which has been caught red handed in the past just making stuff up about celebs. I am skeptical until another source confirms (yes, Page Six reports his management confirmed it, but that's from yet another anonymous Page Six source. Again, I'm skeptical).

Artie:
You need to focus on what you have, not what you don't have...the majority of the country is broke and unemployed.
You have the opportunity to make people happy and even help some financially.
Life is hard for everyone. You are the originator of 'WAA!"
Stop this, don't rob the world of the happiness you bring us with your talent.
Be well, baby gorilla!

Hoping we get Jackie the jokeman back.

Howard needs to talk about how it affects the show, that's for sure. Artie may need his privacy, but the listeners also need updates - from Howard - on the characters who are the reason we listen to the show.
I agree that too much secretiveness is not good for the show, but also, Artie needs to face all of this himself.
Wishing Artie all the best - he can get through this, but he needs significant time in some kind of inpatient treatment, his self-devised program isn't working. I agree with Robin that there's no way Artie has really being doing his "therapy." He needs rehab!

Why didn't HS make fun of him? Too close to home maybe? Respect for the family? Yea, right. That's a first.
