Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and his wife, Meredith, escaped injury in a three-car accident in New York on Friday afternoon.

Sue Estreda of the Bronx was thrown through the window of her SUV and died, the New York Times reports, and a mail truck driver was injured.

The Brokaws said in a statement that they were ‘greatly saddened by this loss of life.’

The crash was set in motion, according to the Brokaws, by a spool of cable that was bouncing in the roadway around 1 p.m. EST. The woman, in a 1998 Ford Expedition, swerved to avoid the hazard, they said, and lost control.

The Brokaws said the SUV slid into the middle lane, forcing a mail truck into the Brokaws’ lane. The truck collided with the couple’s 2006 Volvo.

The SUV overturned after hitting the debris, police said, and Estreda was thrown from her vehicle. A U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman said the truck’s 54-year-old driver, who wasn’t identified, was hospitalized.

The spool of wire that apparently set off the crash had not been found as of Friday evening, said the police. No criminal charges were pending.
