With comedian George Lopez stepping into USC band director Arthur C. Bartner‘s shoes (and up onto his big ol’ ladder), halftime was a little funkier than usual Saturday at the Trojans’ last home game of the 2009 season.

At George’s command, the funk-rock-soul-R&B band War (a particular fave of the Ministry’s senior officers, incidentally) grooved through a medley of ‘Low Rider,’ ‘Cisco Kid’ and ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ while the star of TBS’ late show ‘Lopez Tonight’ got seriously into it.

Dexter Holland, lead singer of the Offspring, made a halftime appearance too. In addition to being a rock star, pilot and hot-sauce entrepreneur, he’s a USC alum, with a master’s in molecular biology. Guess rock ‘n’ roll was better than getting that PhD, eh?

Art B., by the way, wasn’t completely out of the spotlight -- in addition to co-directing with Lopez, he was honored by various city and county officials, including Councilwoman Jan Perry and County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, for achievements during his 40 years leading ‘the greatest marching band in the history of the universe.’

Sorry for the fuzzy specifics on that ‘honor.’ The Ministry’s seats are wayyy over off Tunnel 18, and the Coliseum’s sound system is -- well, it’s sound-system-challenged.
