Update: Steven Tyler says no, his Aerosmith job is not available
"New York, I want you to know I'm not leaving Aerosmith. Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I ... am the rainbow."
-- Steven Tyler, Tuesday night on stage in New York
Alas, the Ministry of Disinformation elves have been up to their tricks, and it's time to set the record straight: Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler surprised the Joe Perry Project onstage in New York on Tuesday night, MTV reports, getting it on the record that any search to replace him is definitely premature.
Guess we should've parsed guitarist Perry's original quote to the Las Vegas Sun a little more closely, instead of being swayed by the certainty of the "Joe Perry: Steven Tyler Has Quit Aerosmith" headline.
Here's what Joe told the Sun last week:
“Steven quit as far as I can tell,” Perry said from his Boston home. “I don’t know anymore [sic] than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know.”
With the benefit of hindsight, we're now banging our head on the table.
Drummer Kramer told a radio station shortly afterward that Perry had been misquoted and that the band wasn't breaking up. Hmm. Misquoted? Don't know about that, but misinterpreted, yes, definitely.
And in fairness to the gossips in the audience, the word wasn't that the band was breaking up, but rather that Tyler was leaving the band and that he'd be replaced.
We're going to go beat up on the elves now.

After the jump, a video that hints at what Aerosmith might be like with another singer at the flamboyant frontman's mike stand.
