[UPDATE No. 2] Adam Lambert 'GMA' concert canceled; 'Early Show,' Letterman book him
If you were hoping to catch Adam Lambert performing on "Good Morning America" this Wednesday, or maybe even see the free concert in person in New York, you're out of luck.
The appearance has been canceled.
According to an e-mail from a show coordinator:
"The Adam Lambert Concert on Good Morning America at the Hudson Theatre has been officially cancelled. It is not necessary to come to the theatre because it will be closed. Thank you for your interest in the show and Adam Lambert. We look forward to your attendance at future events."
(This news via BroadwayWorld.com.)
[UPDATE: 10:31 a.m. Nov. 24,2009 However, CBS has jumped at the opportunity to have Adam on "The Early Show" on Wednesday morning to discuss his American Music Awards performance, CBS News confirms.]
[UPDATE: 11:42 a.m., Nov. 24, 2009 And he'll be on David Letterman's show Wednesday night as well, according to CBS. Performance only!
CBS is definitely stepping into the breach, yes?]
At last count, the Ministry was pushing about 10,000 "Yuck!" votes in its poll on Lambert's performance Sunday at the American Music Awards, a show that drew 14.2 million viewers. (Though supportive votes were slightly ahead of that.)
[UPDATE: 8:10 p.m., Nov. 24, 2009 Note that the poll numbers cited above are from when this post originally was published, at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday. Since then, more readers have voted in support of the performance, and the results will continue to change with time/cdz.]
So where are the corresponding complaints about Lambert to ABC?
In comparison, complaints about Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl were in the half-million neighborhood. (Though the $550,000 fine that was levied is still traveling through the court system.)
Time will tell, we suppose. Maybe the people who were upset worked it all out online?
Or perhaps it's more of a silent protest -- and they just won't tune in again in the future.
At least not Wednesday on "Good Morning America."

How can anyone say this is discimination? I for one am a gay woman and I do not condone what Adam Lambert did. I am not discriminating against him, I am saying it was just plain and simple crap what he put out there. O-Town hit it right on the money in his comment.....Adam's publicist's and management did fail him and they failed him miserably. Did Adam not trust his own true given talent enough to put on a better first show than that? Or what is the message Adam is truly trying to send?
I won't be watching him anymore until I see some class out of him. Be a real performer Adam.

Adam, dearest, I'm sure the porn industry would love you, but leave music alone. OK, everybody, we do have two separate industries for separate parts of the body: music/spectacle for the ear/eye and porn for whatever you have or don't have between the legs.

What I'd like to know is if he is so out in the open and "a sexual person" why did he not act like that on American Idol. Because he thought it would have sent him home pronto.
But now that he is a celeberty he thinks he can shove it in everyones face.

He was canceled because the theme of the song simulates S&M acts...
I find it appropriate for the time it aired (children should not be watching this show anyway!!!, but I bet parents that let their children watch this show also buy them aggressive video games!!!).
There is something we can't deny and it is that what we saw acted and the lyrics of the song actually happens in real life! So, just don't try to cover the sun with one finger, this goes to GMA, it is not how life works!
Also, I saw an interview with Adam Lambert after the AMA and he clearly said that the songs and shows for GMA and Letterman were different, they will show a different side of him and his lyrics.
I can't wait to turn the channel to CBS and enjoy his performance somewhere else and don't give my viewer rating to GMA... there goes the advertisers money: through the toilette!!!

I don't blame ABC for cancelling. This isn't about freedom of expression. This is about a display of poor taste. It's really a shame Lambert (and celebrities of the past) have chosen to resort to cheap "gimmicky" stuff to put on a show. Next time, he should stick to singing rather than attempting to shock.

This is a way out there. We need to question this, we are a nation under God, it this Gods best? Get a clue, we are spirialing down the tube because what is ever cool, is ok, sorry that is wrong. Adam was wrong, I will pray for that man, he is caught in the money game, do what I have to, to make a buck. You should be giving to those less fortunate, all the money you make. I'm discussed with how man kind has gone off the deep end.

correction;
you wrote: "the Ministry was pushing about 10,000 "Yuck!" votes in its poll on Lambert's performance Sunday at the American Music Awards"
the real number is 28% (7,444 votes) vs. 41% (10,846 votes) of people that actually loved the performance.

Didn't watch, don't care. Adam can do whatever he wants on stage. This is the kind of gimmickry the awards shows need to resort to in order to get viewers. the shows are DULL. That awards are MEANINGLESS. The only thing halfway worth seeing are the performers doing mini-concerts, and even then I'm asleep before the third act.
To all you "Madonna and Brittany did it" folks, two things: 1. People complained about that too at the time. And 2. Guy on guy is different. Welcome to the double standard. Its only been around since forever. Some people just don't want to see simulated, salacious, sex on their TVs. Just because you do, or you don't mind when it happens isn't the point. ABC has to look at their total audience, not just the "we don't care" part.

ianaleah- me, too, i am sooo jealous of that keyboardist......adam is an awesome entertainer, and gma was silly to cave to pressure. give adam some credit; he's a fine, sensitve, intelligent person who would have known to tone it way down for a morning show.
the sound system or whatever may have been partly to blame for the crappy sound during his ama set. it is sad that more people didn't get to hear his incredible once in a lifetime voice for much of the set. i'm sure that dancing around didn't help him to sing either.
i would have wanted him to sing "broken open"...... but, adam is adam, and he is an artist. you have to let an artist follow their ideas, and i give adam all respect as an artist. people who say they were a fan but after this show they aren't are lame....and never really "got" adam in the first place. or maybe they never did watch any of his old club performances on youtube, which were similar to the ama's sexy performance.
it's like saying you like prince, then getting offended at some his songs.......

If anyone was surprised or shocked by Adam's performance, they were absolutely not an Adam fan. Anyone who says they were a fan and disapproved of his AMA appearance could not be a true fan. You might have liked a song or two or been captivated by his looks, but no way you were a fan of this interesting man. He pushes the envelope. He did this on Idol, so you should have been prepared. The entire hypocracy of the whole thing is that a probable child molester was given multiple awards. And Janet Jackson crotch grabbed herself and others multiple times. This is OK but simulated oral sex and two men kissing is considered obscene. What is really obscene is the phony homophobic shock displayed by ABC. They promoted Adam's appearance like crazy saying it would be over the top. They even showed glimpses of his set and the dance move. They knew. They just wanted the ratings, and they got them, didn't they. What ABC should have done is can the person in charge of the sound system. It sucked, and it wasn't just Adam. If you listened, you know if affected all of the dance numbers. Well, I'm going to buy about 30 more CDs and give them as x-mas presents. His album rocks big time.

Hey, momshell, it's me, Christie D'Zurilla. Actually, my "pushing 10,000" comment, written around 8:30 a.m. Pacific time, referred to answers 1 and 3 ("Loved it" and "Lighten up") added up in the "pro" category and answers 2 and 4 ("Hated it" and "Enough is enough") added up in the "con" camp.
When the post originally went up, the "pushing 10,000" numbers cited were accurate.
As of 3:10 p.m. PST, the tallies were 14,104 total in the "pro" answers and 11,494 total in the "con."
So no correction, just a clarification of what was being referred to. As more people vote, those numbers obviously will change.

Okay, let me get this straight, Eminem can sing about rape, 12 of them no less, but Adam Lambert performs a little guy on guy innuendo and now the world is going to fall apart? So, it's okay for women to be sexually objectified, sexually explicit, kiss each other and worse yet, raped? Just want to make sure I'm understanding all this....
Posted by: tj | Nov 24, 2009 at 03:37 PM
Thanks for showing us the REAL YOU, Adam..."American Idol" gave you the opportunity to become a mainstream entertainer and you threw it all away with your over-the-top performance at the AMA!! You have chosen to marginalize yourself and you are DONE as a mainstream entertainer, you have NOBODY to blame but yourself...

Good. I am glad it's cancelled. Have you listend to his interviews? He is completely ARROGANT about it. No humility whatsoever. The nice guy from American Idol is gone. Welcome to the real Adam Lambert - a nasty, sick, STD infested FREAK that doesn't give a crap what people think and wants to put everything in your face, including his crotch. He doesn't care about his fans. He's all bent about making a POINT that he himself missed the whole point. He is all about SHOCKING the audience in the end he will be SHOCKED that his overconfidence stunts don't work and he will FAIL in his career.

Way to go Early Show!! I agree about Janet Jackson and the guy on his knees in front of her crouch. At least the acting out of Adam Lambert actually has reason ie. lyrics of his song. I thought it was brave, visuals for the song, just love that boy. And, yes, this is from a Mother and a 61 year old. I went to see 2012 yesterday, there is no one on this earth that sings their butt off the way Adam does... and I know about music. He does not disapoint.

Adam IS an increcible talent. Too bad that he wasn't confident enough in himself. He could have been The Top Talent to everyone in the world if he had just stucfk to being the nice guy and great performer we all loved on American Idol. I guess he was a good actor, too, because he won us over. Now we know that he reeally wants to appeal to one type of audience. I wonder how proud his aprents are now? Thank God for American Idol that Adam didn't win. Poor Paula!

How are people so pathetic that they'd call and complain about sexy stuff on a music show at 11pm? Desperate Housewives or Supernatural or Melrose Place is showing stuff way more graphic way earlier. It's like my grandparents panic about how "vulgar" Elvis was. Move to Iran if you wanna be repressed and hate on others. And if you just don't like tmi, just turn off the tv, but why complain and say no one should be sexual just because you don't like it? Also, if you didn't phone in about Shakira thrusting or Eminem talking about rape, you're just a homophobe. Maybe you don't think you are, ("oh I have a gay friend") but yup you got some Issues.

Adam Lambert was ot the only provacative act on the AMA'S. This goes back to reverse discrimination. Jaet can grab her crotch, have a wardrobe malfunction and female acts less is more. When men kiss in public it's a scandal, when women kis, it's hot. Double Stadard bs

The supportive votes were "slightly" ahead? LMAO BY 3000. Adam Lambert is a ferocious and gifted entertainer and found his inner rock/punk/hardcore voice after a week of harassment and criticism by OUT magazine and others. I am over the moon about his show, One of the only LIVE singers without lip sync including GaGA who copped out by presenting a watered down version of her video and used lip sync. Not to mention Rhianna with 10 weapons and overall gratuitous crotch grabbing (from Jackson on forward) and groping (Carrie) and miserable bragging about rape Eminem. Adam broke the constraining discipline of 17 years of professional theater and committed. Commitment is everything in art not the stupid American Idol manipulation. Freddie Mercury: "A concert is not a live rendition of our album. It's a theatrical event." YOU GO ADAM YOU HAVE WON OUR HEARTS AND ARE THE VOICE OF THE NEW GENERATION that people are people regardless of their mechanical components.

I hope Adam learns something from this. I knew that performance on the GMA show was coming and I could NOT imagine the things done on the AMA's show would be broadcast on America. I'm sure he's lost a lot of fans with that poor performance. I loved Adam to death and I know he needs to do his own thing and I appreciate that, but the vocals this past sunday 'sucked' (i'm sorry but they did), whoever choregraphed it should be shot, just overall it was terrible and i expected much more. I just now saw his music video and i can honestly say i loved it, but i honestly hope he never pulls crap like that again...

CBS ROCKS!!!!! and so do you ADAM!!! His album is amazing, excellent music....refreshing, catchy, eclectic, haunting, touching, fun, inspiring and much more all at the same time. Instead of judging him based on ONE performance, you haters should listen to his album and then make your decisions based on the actual music, which is in the end what it is all about. And to all of you that were fans before the AMA performance and now are not; again based on that ONE performance, obviously you were not really fans in the first place, he is still the amazing, kind, eloquent and foremost talented guy we fell in love with, so relax people and enjoy the show, thats all it is, the ADAM LAMBERT show, and if you dont enjoy it dont watch period.
Posted by: Michi | Nov 24, 2009 at 09:16 PM
Dear David Letterman...Please do not let Adam Lambert on your show. He doesn't deserve it. Please don't stoop to it. I've been watching your show since your beginnings, since at least 1973. This isn't what you've ever been about. Don't go for these cheap ratings. You don't need it.. Adam Lambert doesn't respect his opportunity. Don't do it. He's screwed up.
Posted by: p | Nov 24, 2009 at 09:40 PM
Like his AMA performance or not, but get his CD. Each track is better than the last one and they are all incredible. His talent just pops out without all the visuals to cloud it.
If the performance was so risque, why didn't the AMA organization tell him to cool it down????? Don't they watch the dress rehearsals?
