King Solomon and His Followers — A Valuable Aid to the Memory

02:00 PM PT, Apr 30 2008

A few years ago, a then-girlfriend gifted me this genuine Masonic handbook, printed in 1920, as a Christmas present. (I wish everyone had such a good understanding of my tastes.) The entirety of the manual is written in nigh-impenetrable code and shorthand, save passages like that in the middle of the left-hand page, quoting from Genesis.

Today on clusterflock I found this little treasure of national secrecy. In this flickr set you will find  pictures from an enciphered Masonic handbook from 1920. chronicling their rituals and speeches. Due to this handbook being printed prior to 1923, the text is open to the public as per current US copyright laws. Here's hoping he puts up the entire handbook for our viewing pleasure in the near future. I love that it's written in shorthand and that I am capable of following most of it due to my grandfather haven given me books on how to read and write shorthand many years ago. Truly fascinating. I am both terrified and aroused that you can read this. Can you have me killed? For lulz?

Christie St. Martin
Christie St. Martin was born in Bermuda and educated at two Canadian universities that would prefer not to be mentioned here until she supplies them with healthy building endowments. An uber-geek and proud of it, she established herself as an Internet presence with All Things Christie, a blog that managed, with its quirky and unabashedly self-indulgent links to and commentary on whatever struck her fancy or her ire, to attract small legions of readers, fans and would-be stalkers. Her interests were as they are: myriad and eclectic, though certainly given to a particular fondness for the tech-y, the game-y and the kitschy. She is her own organizing principle, a kind of mad surfer on the crests of cultural lunacy, alternately acerbic, ecstatic and unintentionally insightful. She has since blogged for VH1's "Best Week Ever" and Exhausticated.com, providing her usual melange of cheek, snark and occasional observation. Christie also contributes to LAT's Hero Complex blog.
