Video games! Rock 'n' roll!
Good news from the geek world this week, as those of us eagerly awaiting Will Wright's "Spore," the involving multiplatform game in which users control a species through generations of evolution, will feature music from experimental musician Brian Eno, according to a report on Wired.com.
While it doesn't provide too much detail on the music, the post notes that the music generator for the game, which develops as users move through the game, was developed with the help of Eno.
But as gaming music gets more involved, there's still plenty out there championing the video game sounds of yore, and turning eight-bit, vintage toys into modern rock 'n' roll instruments. Check out this trailer from "Blip Festival: Reformat the Planet," which will debut at South by Southwest next month in Austin, Texas. The film documents the underground chip music scene, in which new music is created using old video game hardware.
I fear a feature-length film on the scene could wear a bit thin after a bit, but then I watch the trailer again, and see that little kid rockin' out in the street, and am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. And the dance cut that ends the trailer is pretty irresistible.
