'Juno' & the 'Chipmunks': Eternally linked
The soundtrack to the winter's runaway indie hit "Juno" will be released to record stores on Tuesday, Jan. 8, but it's already become a part of history in the music world.
The indie-rock focused compilation, which features music from Kimya Dawson, Sonic Youth, the Kinks and Cat Power, among others, has been available at digital outlets since December.
It moved to No. 1 on the digital chart this week, and at the time of writing (8:44 p.m., Jan. 7, 2008), it's the No. 1 album on iTunes, ahead of Radiohead's "In Rainbows" (screen shot at left).
Along with the soundtrack to "Alvin and the Chipmunks," Billboard Magazine's Fred Bronson reports that this is the first time in the short history of the magazine's top digital albums tally that a pair of soundtracks have occupied the top two slots.
So at least in one history book, "Juno" and the "Chipmunks" will be forever tied together.
Note: This was the first and likely last time the soundtrack to "Alvin and the Chipmunks" was mentioned here, which was determined after listening to the 30-second snippet of the soundtrack's "How We Roll."
