Vote early, really early….

Green_day_275_3 The Recording Academy’s television special “My Night at the Grammys” will air Nov. 30, featuring 25 fan-selected clips from Grammy television history, itself narrowed down from 50 pre-selected by the Recording Academy.

With the show a little more than a month away, we figured we’d go make our selections today.

Alas, we found this when we went to the CBS site: “The votes are in and America has decided which contenders made the cut.” Really? No last minute, text-massage tallies for this show? That's it? Granted, it's our fault for not getting around to it sooner (we were waiting for the blog to launch, really), but the Recording Academy only sent out the press release Sept. 10, so we surely thought we'd have more than four weeks-ish for a post-Thanksgiving special.

Nevertheless, we didn’t, so we did some scoping around to see if we can get some tips as to what America may have decided upon. We stumbled upon this little puppy (err, widget), which might (perhaps?) showcase some of the performances perceived to be the most popular.

A few seconds of Kanye West’s 2006 performance of “Golddigger” brought a smile to our face, and Christina Aguilera’s torturous, glass-shattering vocal gymnastics on James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s World” quickly wiped it away.

We wouldn’t mind seeing Madonna’s 2006 collaboration with the Gorillaz again, but a quick jump over to YouTube reminded us that the Gorillaz were criminally under-used in the show opener. We’re still confused as to why the Gorillaz just kinda fade to the background at the 2:30 minute mark.

We were also confused as to why Ricky Martin (who?) was included in the final 50, and though we love the Clash, we still don’t love them being sung by Bruce Springsteen. Our guess is we’ll see the 2001 collaboration between Elton John and Eminem on the rapper’s “Stan” on the November special, as well as that Paul McCartney/Jay-Z pairing from 2006, which will still, alas, lack Danger Mouse.

But we’ll be happy as long as Green Day’s explosive 2005 performance from “American Idiot” was voted in, as it’s the closest the Grammys have gotten to being subversive in this decade.

But perhaps those who voted have some thoughts they would like to share... The floor is yours.

Bob Dylan's performances...the year he mumbled through Masters of War and the year "Soy Bomb" popped up on stage and danced and twisted in the background in which Mr. Dylan almost broke out laughing...
