He succeeds Andy Mooney, the longtime head of Disney’s consumer products group, who abruptly resigned this week to pursue other opportunities.

Chapek will oversee a newly formed companywide consumer products organization that will consolidate retail and licensing across Disney’s various business lines, including Walt Disney Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Entertainment, the television group and consumer products.

Alan Bergman, president of Walt Disney Studios, will assume Chapek’s former responsibilities for distributing films in theaters, on television and on digital platforms.

‘As the retail market becomes more centralized, it is important to provide the consumer with an array of choices in a seamless, coordinated way,’ said a statement from Disney President and CEO Robert A. Iger.

Chapek is a veteran of home entertainment and was an advocate for new technologies such as the Blu-ray disc, which delivers movies in high definition. Since November 2009, he has overseen film distribution at Walt Disney Studios.
