Entertainment companies, guilds make new website to promote anti-piracy effort

A coalition of the major media conglomerates and entertainment labor unions has launched a website to promote anti-piracy legislation that they support.

Creative America features statistics on Web piracy and testimonials from the type of entertainment figures not featured on TMZ, like production managers and directors of photography, about the effect of content theft on their livelihoods. It urges visitors to contact congressional representatives to support the Protect IP Act, a piece of legislation supported by the industry that would block access to foreign websites that offer pirated content and direct search engines to delist them.

The legislation is opposed by a number of Web companies including Google. It was passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee in May.

Backers of the Creative America site include media conglomerates CBS Corp., Comcast Corp., Sony Pictures Entertainment, News Corp., Viacom Inc., Walt Disney Co. and Time Warner Inc., along with the Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild of America, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and industry trade group Motion Picture Assn. of America.
