Facing the loss of its soaps, Hoover pulls advertising from ABC

Millions of soap opera fans aren't the only ones who had the rug pulled out from under them.

HooverLogo Hoover, the vacuum cleaner company, said it was yanking its advertising from Walt Disney Co.-owned ABC after the network's decision last week to sweep two of its three soap operas off its daytime schedule.

"My wife and mother are both passionate viewers of 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live,' as are many of my colleagues here at Hoover," marketing executive Brian Kirkendall wrote this week on Hoover's Facebook page.

Kirkendall said Hoover would vacuum all of its commercials off ABC by Friday. "We're making every attempt to pull our spots from these programs sooner," he wrote.

Kirkendall was not available Tuesday. The network declined to comment.

Hoover also set up an email address, [email protected], to compile email from consumers who are upset about ABC's decision to cancel the two dramas that have been anchors of  ABC's daytime schedule for more than 40 years.

Whether Hoover's campaign is a clever marketing ploy, or simply was a sympathetic voice among a sea of anguished viewers -- it worked.

"Way to go Hoover! You made a fan of me!," wrote one woman on Hoover's Facebook page.

"Hoover, you are by far the best!!! I'm getting a new Hoover this weekend,"  wrote another.

To Brian Kirkendall (and his supportive family), thank you for standing with us, the fans of soaps. I, too shall remember Hoover products when I need to purchase home products. I wish other corporations would take a similar stance. I am still in shock that mr. fons (sic) is cancelling soaps and changing ABC/Disney channel to either children focused and/or reality/talk shows. There are truly enough of the latter on TV/cable/satellite now that there is little left for "adults" to watch. TV corporate heads are driving away those who watch TV for entertaining. TV is becoming a more for profit vehicle and with the anticipated internet fees consumers will be forced to retreat from both TV and the internet. This akin to watching your child grow up after you have nurtured them to find they are maiming you--your loving child has become your worst nightmare--a monster.

It is really interesting after reading All the various comments on the numerous sites devoted to the cancelling of these soaps--the outcry from the fans, one is left wondering about the "who were the group that were surveyed?" that led their cancellation. There are very few comments in support of their cancellation. (I can't even believe how personal I feel about this issue.) I know I was not asked my opinion because I think the replacements sound awful and boring. Mario has cooking shows on two channels and both were less than exciting. TV is fast becoming visual radio with the plethora of talk shows.

I am shocked by this decision of ABC, and Disney, first the uproot the cast crew and families of All My Children and move them to Los Angeles, not to mention the fine actors who didn't make the move and forced into retirment such as David Canary and Joe Mcdonnel Thorten Kaye and others the little people who lost thier jobs like Emma, and the Boys who played Kendall and Zax Kids.. for what to all be out of jobs because teens want to see different programs.. HEY TEENS are in SCHOOL.. it the Moms and Grandmoms that have been watching these soaps since day one... that view these stories religously,

I have been watching All my children since its first air date, i have been watching General Hospital and One life to live since day one, and omg i watched edge of night, search for tomorrow the doctors, ryans hope, port charles and i watched these soaps with my Nana, who I know still watches from the holes in floor of heaven.. as for ABC why can't these soaps continue on the Soap Channel it's where I go when the networks think we want to hear over and over again that OJ lost his mind again, save it,,,, Soap Channel needs to pick up these soaps and keep our actors and writers and producers directors and etc with JOBS and Hoover people show all your commericals on the Soap Channel... even pitch this offer to Lifetime Tv for Woman I watch Lifetime all day into the night. I DVR my soaps off the Soap Channel.. So Lifetime TV Soap Channel listen up We Need you.... Help save our Soaps

Thank you, Hoover for pulling your ads!! In this day and age of
corporate greed, it's wonderful to see some goodness!
I for one have always purchased Hoover Vacs. and will continue to do so!!
Thanks again, Hoover!!

THANK YOU HOOVER, I AM SO GLAD YOU HAD THE GUTS TO STAND UP TO ABC, AND SUPPORT THE FANS OF AMC AND OLTL. YOUR PRODUCT IS THE ONE I WILL SEEK OUT AND PURCHASE. I FOR ONE, WILL NEVER FORGET YOUR SUPPORT.
WE ALL NEED TO KEEP UP THE FIGHT. HOW MANY OTHER PROGRAMS HAVE LASTED FOR 40+ YEARS, WHY BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING. BRIAN FRONS IS OUT TO SABITOGE ABC. CBS & NBC ARE GETTING SUCH A LAUGH AT WHAT AN IDIOT HE IS. I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF ONE OF THEM DECIDE TO PICK UP AMC & OLTL. I WILL TURN TO THEM. ESPECIALLY SINCE I WILL BE TURNING OFF ABC FOR GOOD. ABC DOESN'T REALIZE WE, THE VIEWING PUBLIC HAVE VIEWING CHOICES. NO DISNEY...NO TO ABC!!

I HAVE BEEN WATCHING ALL MY CHILDREN AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE SINCE I WAS A YOUNG GIRL AND THEY BEGAN. I AM 63 YEARS OLD. WE WOULD TAPE THEM IF NOT AT HOME. THIS WILL BE A SORRY MISTAKE FOR ABC. SOME OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS ARE ON THERE BUT I WILL BOYCOTT AND NEVER WATCH AGAIN. YOU HAVE MANY SHOWS YOU NEED TO GET RID OF INSTEAD OF OUR DAYTIME SOAPS. SANDRA MORGAN

Thanks Hoover!

I've always loved your products. I will get out there & buy more of your
quality prducts to show my thanks for pulling your ads from ABC!
You have a loyal customer for life!

Thank you hoover for your support in saving our soaps.
I will only buy Hoover from now on!!!!!!

thanks hoover for supporting my two favorites. i really hope that we can somehow save our soaps.ive been watching them since i was little with my mom.i would miss them very much

Thank you Hoover for backing not only Your soap fans but your products also.. We won't foget this, ABC needs to reconsider what they have done. At this time more than ever when the only entertanment we can afford is TV they take away the shows we liked the most, I've watched these shows as long as I've been using Hoovers products

I was absolutely shocked when ABC decided to cancel oltl and amc. I do not want to watch a cooking show or a weight loss show. I can go to other channels for those. I have watched these two shows since their beginnings. I am disappointed with ABC. I do not know how they make their choices but it appears that the viewers weren't asked their opinions. I am sad that the Disney Corp. is involved with ABC. We have slowly watched them use their channel to push gay rights and other activist ideas on all of us. I am concerned about how things will go at Disneyworld and other parks. The powers that be are making some poor choices and not considering all of us viewers choices. Thanks Hoover for allowing us to voice are feelings toward them.

You'd be making a big mistake taking the 2 Soap Operas off ABC, especially OLTL. Exspecially when they are getting so good right now.

I'm very disappointed in ABC for cancelling All My Children and One Life to Live. I love those shows and the characters feel like family. If their cancelled I'm switching to another channel.I'm very sorry to those who are going to lose their jobs. think about it ABC before it's too late or you will lose alot of fans.

Believe me I support all the product advertised on my soaps
All My Children and One live to life this is my time to relax after work and
escape for little time from all my stress. I started watching with my mother
and I watched with my daughter and now I watch with my granddaughter
This is our family tradition. Thanks Hoover for supporting our soaps
