Keith Olbermann abruptly departs MSNBC

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

MSNBC announced Friday night that its marquee "Countdown" anchor and talk show host Keith Olbermann was out.  The network did not provide a reason for his abrupt departure.

"MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors," NBC Universal said in a statement.

Olbermann and his bosses have clashed in recent months. He was suspended in November for two days after revelations that he gave donations to a Democratic political candidate, which was a violation of the company's ethics policies for news employees.

If this is because of Comcast shutting him up so that the corporate takover of the entire media can take one more giant step, I will be cancelling all of Comcast service tomorrow. Keith has been an eloquent, intelligent, not-afraid-to-tell-truth commentator during times when few others gave us anything but propaganda and repeated talking points. Not much fearless journalism left. We are slowly but surely turning into a fascist country.

Can't believe it. Don't want to.

Can believe the almost giddy hateful responses posted above by the usual suspects - aka, unintelligent victims of the right-wing propaganda machine. What you really hate about Mr. Olbermann, Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow is their refutation of the lies you hear from the Murdoch Empire and meglomanaical religious fakirs.

One less light that shines some truth in this Propaganda media circus that we have as news. I for one will miss his show, he wasn't Walker Kronkite but in my opinion he is as close to someone with integrity that we have today

I cant believe Keith Olbermann's show is gone. What happened? It was the best TV news show of all. MSNBC must bring it back immediately. What can we do? Give suggestions, please.

Bring Keith back!He's the best.

Keith Olbermann was the best in the business. MSNBC will lose ratings without Keith Olbermann, and thus they will lose sponsers.

We need something to counter the racist and very Anti-American Fox News.

This is a huge loss! MSNBC has lost its most talented anchor. His shows made you think - we're sick of talking heads. We will be looking for Keith Olbermann on other networks. MSNBC must have caved to someone . . .

Goodbye MSNBC! Keith was the reason I watched you at all! The class is gone.

Jeramie, well thank god you still have Foxnews for a "fair and balanced" view of the world. Gag

Goodbye Keith. I rarely agreed with you entirely, just mostly. You are the first victim of the Comcast-NBC merger as the "public" airways are further "corporatized" and "privatized". There will be more, until all that is left are poorer and poorer versions of Fox noise. I know you'll appreciate this Keith: Corporate greed is insatiable, and short sighted. Meaning that someday you'll be back, working for some other greedy corporation that just wants a short term gain. Will miss you.

well its sad that msnbc has such a stick up their buns. I can't watch morning joe cause frankly it just sucks and as a liberal i need comic relief from fox and the others. so i won't be watching MSNBC anymore kieth's show had guts and truth and it will be missed
The program your using is going down the tubes and your making such gutless moves maybe you can get martha stewart to leave halmark and do a show on politics!

"I am done with MSNBC. And won't the talking heads on the right be happy?

I just cannot believe it!

HAAAAAHAAAAAAAA the idiot finally went over the line with his hateful Socialist crap!
Yes, we "talking heads" are ecstatic!
You gotta problem with that... too bad so sad for YOU Socialist!

I always made sure that nothing came between me and "Countdown." I'am done with MSNBC.

WTF??? This is astounding! I can't imagine this was his choice. I sure hope Keith finds another network. I miss him already. Comcast/MSNBC - this was a bad move on your part.

Goodbye, MSNBC - you had been my Go-To network, but I'm seeing the writing on the wall with Keith Olbermann's departure. It can't be going in a better direction. I think I'll have to look into Fios....

Well ruination always has a start somewhere... and in this case it's Comcast buying MSNBC. Funny this is their first move after buffaloing the FCC on Net Neutrality.
Control the content, and the message in a country filled with fools and pretty soon you control the country... Thanks for reporting the truth and the facts over the years Keith!

Maybe they want to shut down the network? Can't afford it anymore? It wont hurt Keith, may even be better in the long run. It's too bad I wont be able to tune in for his commentary, but with all that drama last year, I wouldn't blame him for wanting to leave!

Now where will all the ignorant Reslugs go to get the real news on their worst people in their party?

Na na na na
Na na na na
Hey Hey Hey

BTW Keith, I feel like you're an anti-Semitic, sexist, arrogant advocate of violence against people who don't support your views. And if I've said anything wrong...DISPROVE IT.

See what I did there? Wasn't it ridiculous? Well, KO here did the same thing to Senator Scott Brown in a sad, pitiful attempt to dissuade MA voters from voting for him. Good thing he was in the crosshairs of the new ownership.

See what I did there? It's because Olbermann had an embarrassing level of hatred towards Palin, and blamed her for 2 weekends ago, with no proof. Moral of the story: Olbermann was a joke, and not even a good joke that gets high ratings.

Did they lay off the guy who mops up his puddles?

RIP Msnbc!!!! How stupid can they be.

Good luck Keith don't understand it, was not prepared for this tonite They have got to be kinding!!!!!!!

Keith was the only reason I started watching MSNBC.I cannot believe this! To me he is MSNB and he was OUR voice.

Another good thing comes to an end. Keith was MSNBC. I guess I go back to regular TV. Anyone know what is on network tv these days? I stopped watching network tv during the writers strike and started watching MSNBC exclusively, largley because of Olbermann. If Countdown resurrects on another network, other than Fox of course, I will be there. Good luck Keith, I will be looking for you. BTW MSNBC, you may want to research the MSG Network and where they were when they had the Yankees and where they are today.
