David Madden, the top creative executive at Fox Television Studios -- the News Corp.-owned production company responsible for some of the cable industry’s highest-rated dramas -- has been tapped as president of the unit.

Madden, who most recently was executive vice president, succeeds Emiliano Calemzuk. Calemzuk resigned last week to become chief executive of the U.S. arm of Shine Group, a U.K.-based production company that is headed by Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch.

Fox Television Studios, which became a hot producer of dramas for cable under Calemzuk, has been trying to broaden its reach into broadcast television as well. Its cable shows include ‘White Collar’ and ‘Burn Notice’ on USA and ‘The Glades’ on A&E. It also produces ‘The Good Guys,’ a buddy comedy for Fox, and ‘The Games’ for ABC.

‘David has been front and center throughout Fox Television Studios’ rise to its current position as one of the premiere brands in cable programming,’ Gary Newman and Dana Walden, the chairmen of 20th Century Fox Television, said in a joint statement. Like Calemzuk, Madden will report to Newman and Walden.

Calemzuk’s departure was not a complete surprise. He rose quickly at News Corp. and was key in turning Fox Television Studios into a profitable unit. However, there was little room for him to move within the company, at least on the television side in its U.S. operations. At Shine, he will oversee Reveille, the production company whose credits include NBC’s ‘The Office’ and ‘The Biggest Loser.’

By jumping to Shine, Calemzuk will still be close to a powerful Murdoch.
