‘The Karate Kid’ is looking like summer’s first surprise hit.

The remake of the 1980s classic starring Jaden Smith sold $18.8 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada on Friday and is headed toward a weekend gross of about $50 million.

Pre-release polling had indicated ‘Karate Kid’ would take in from $30 million to $35 million for the weekend.

20th Century Fox’s big-screen adaptation of ‘The A-Team’ took in close to $10 million on Friday, according to two competing studios, and will likely gross a little less than $30 million by Sunday.
