AFTRA approves contract extension

If you work on a soap opera or reality show, your pay check might be a little bigger soon.

The board of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has approved a one-year extension of its so-called network code, which covers morning news shows, soaps, late-night talk and reality shows, among other programming. The contract includes a 2% increase in program fees and a 0.5% increase in employer contributions to the union’s health and pension plan. The new contract will expire on Nov. 15, 2011.

AFTRA was expected to extend the contract, which expires in November, so that it could focus time and resources on jointly negotiating a new prime-time television and theatrical contract with the Screen Actors Guild. Those negotiations are due to start in October.
