Fox News cruising as usual, but Glenn Beck takes a little spill

Fox News Channel finishing first in the cable news ratings race is about as newsworthy as Bruce Springsteen closing a show with "Born to Run."

BECK,jpg Nonetheless, that the News Corp.-owned cable channel has finished first in viewers and key demographics for 100 months in a row is something of an achievement. In prime time, Fox News averaged about 1.9 million viewers for the month of April. That beat the combined audiences of MSNBC, CNN and HLN.

Not everyone at Fox News is dancing on top of their desks. Glenn Beck has seen his audience fall almost 30% since the start of the year, from about 2.9 million viewers in January to 2.1 million in April.

While the Beck sensation may be slowing, the decline in his audience has hardly made a dent on the lead he enjoys for his 5 p.m. festival of emotions. His rivals should hold off a little on popping the Champagne..

Speaking of rivals, CNN's Larry King seems to have gotten no ratings boost for his recent personal troubles. His prime-time audience of 670,000 viewers was down 41% compared to April 2009. He was off almost 50% in the 25-54 demographic. He now routinely loses not only to Fox News, but to MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and, in fact, is barely staying ahead of HLN's Joy Behar. Larry King is not the only King having a hard time at CNN. John King's 7 p.m. show is getting clobbered as well, losing almost half of Lou Dobbs' audience from a year ago.

MSNBC, meanwhile, continues to pull away from CNN, beating it in viewers and demographics in prime time. Maddow in particular is seeing her fortunes rise, and she now beats her colleague Keith Olbermann among adults 25-54.

That's because Rachel Maddow is smart, savvy, articulate and most importantly, WELL INFORMED. She and her staff do their homework.

Unfortunately, CNN has been losing its focus since the presidential election in 2008. The shuffling of anchors and re-branding is not working. I used to love to watch CNN, but now it is too painful watching a once great cable news operation grasping at straws for new ideas.

Ali Velshi may be a great financial reporter but he is not anchor material. Rick Sanchez for two hours is too much. Plus John King is an excellent reporter, but not suitable for hosting his own show. They are not making the best use of their best talent.

CNN clearly needs new management to give it a new direction.

Beck is slipping because people are realizing that most of what he has to say is crapp and lies presented in a childish way.
His bizarre little circus has begun to grow old.

America wants and needs FACT based TRUTH and, like it or not for some of us, Maddow basis her program on the verifiable facts, not some crazy brain snot like Beck!

Maddow has a much more even temperment than Olbermann.

Larry should've retired years ago.

Love Glenn beck, love Hannity more. Keep it up Fox and don't change.

Beck is such a waste of human attention. I am schocked he even has 2.1 million viewers. The guy is a lie machine that is ideal for any conspiracy theorist.

I think we should put Beck, The Birthers and Limbaugh on an island together. World would be a better place and people are less intelligent for watching or listening to them.

Beck tells you the truth you can't find that on CNN or MSN. The liberal media is killing the country!!!!

Glen Beck should be banned from any type of TV appearances. he's a liar and relies on sensationalism. If Fox "News" is number one in the ratings we have more dumb asses and sheep occupying this country than I originally thought. The only news is about Fox and how ridiculous their entertainment program is and how far from the real news it actually is. Proof positive that Murdock is in it for the money and nothing else. They should change the name to one word "GARBAGE"! I rarely watch TV but if I did I would blur past Fox News. Trash. Wake up Rupert!

Oh....I see so if the moderator is a liberal he/she will make sure nothing positive is written about Beck. LA Times from the left coast....I bet my first post will never be seen.

Beck is out!

Fox News has realized that it is doing awesomely well with Republicans out of power. The longer the Republicans stay in the wilderness, the better Fox News does. However, some people seem to think that Fox News is advocating for Republicans to regain control of the House and Senate: Fox is not doing anything to dispel that notion. However, if you watch careful, Fox is marketing itself to the most right wing of the Republican Party which to me seems as if they are somehow working against moderate Republicans who are more likely to retake Congress and the Senate. By working against the Republicans while supporting the most radical elements in their midst, Fox News gets to play up its conservative cred while reaping the fruits of increased viewership.

The left wing sees anything but their fantasy world as "racist", "biased", and "hateful". They cheapen the very words by pushing those buttons on anything outside of their political-social comfort zone. Like it or not Fox eats all the other news cable networks for lunch. Are they perfect? Hardly. I don't like Beck or Hannity. However the much criticized news department actually presents an alternative view point not available on CNN or MSNBC. The Times political bias has also cost them a ton of subscribers and revenue, how's that working for you?

There is no liberal media! One of the biggest lies out thee!

Beck should not be compared to real news shows. He belongs in the soap opera or some other fiction category. Law and Order has a closer relationship to the truth than does Fox News in general and specifically Glenn Beck.

It's nice to see that, like other poorly conceived works of fiction, his popularity is on the decline.

Reality has reasserted its dominion.

I am waiting for Beck to spin that Obama was born via C Section and therefore is barred from the presidency because heis not a natural born citizen.

Has Glenn run out of bad ideas? Does his blackboard need new batteries? Has everyone found out about his past?

by the way, when will we see the article about the times's circulation figures?

Beck is like Professional Wrestling.
All staged, nothing real and totally for trailer-trash!

Maddow is the most obnoxious person I have ever seen on TV. Talk about a bias, she has it. Her facial expressions make me want to throw up. I have no idea why she has a TV show.

Liberal Media: Maddow, KO, Shultz, Rhodes and Democracy Now

Non-Liberal media: Will, Hume, Gregory, Schieffer, Kondrake, Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck, Levin, Savage, Schlessinger, Hewitt, Ingraham, Bennett, Prager, Muller, Medved, O'Reilly, Boortz, Buchanan, Arthur, Scarborough, Gallagher, Brooks, Frum, Carlson, Gigot, McLaughlin, Crowley, Barnes, Kudlow, Fund, Morris, etc. etc.

"The Liberal Media" is the largest LIE in America. It is a shame.

what liberal media if fox has finished first for 100 months.

only a demagogue would continue to believe in this liberal media.

this is another incongruity of how the right thinks...despite all the evidence in the contrary, they still believe in their own lies.

No mention that Beck was on vacation for a week in April? Could that have affected ratings? Looking forward to the May ratings.

Beck is certainly occasionally histrionic, but Maddow's an imbecile and Olbermann's a moronic lunatic.

Fox is the best. Love Fox news. This Latino only watches Fox news. I am so glad they are doing so well. Keep it up Fox.

Not to nitpick, but Springsteen hasn't closed a show with "Born to Run" in decades, if ever.

Beck's popularity hasn't decline. The weather is warmer along with daylight saving time, people are outdoors more often during the evening. All news programming will suffer a little decline in viewership during the summer months. You still have to admit that Beck's 1.3 million viewership during the warmer months is nothing to sneeze at. Beck's program alone beat CNN and MSNBC in all of their timeslots. Beck fans, don't forget to set the Tivo.
