CBS, other broadcasters will benefit from Supreme Court ruling on political ads

Corporate America wasn't the only one cheering the Supreme Court decision last week to toss out a rule that barred corporations from using their own money to pay for political spots. Big media also has reason to break out the bubbly.

Among those with the most to gain from the high court ruling is CBS. The network has TV stations that reach almost 40% of the country, and those stations could receive as much as $50 million in political advertising as a result of the ruling, according to Needham & Co. analyst Laura Martin. She estimated that in the 2006 mid-term elections, CBS pulled in $160 million in political advertising.

News Corp.'s Fox, which owns stations reaching close to 40% of the United States, also has reason to smile. And yet, when it comes to political advertising -- unlike everything else -- having an older audience is a positive. CBS skews older than Fox, and most political advertising targets people over the age of 40.

Local radio could see a spurt in political advertising from the ruling, which would also be good news for CBS as well as Clear Channel, two of the biggest radio owners in the country. Cable operators will also get some new political money but to a lesser degree.

Huh. This is too funny. Corporations will be so happy, as will Republicans, until they realize that many rich corporations are owned by non-us citizen, non-white male oppressor, non-republicans. Hello China!

This means that money buys political power, yet again...

I am a republican and I can see the doom in our government by this decition. It is a sad day and if we as a nation are to overcome, we must as a nation band togeather and find some way around this rueling.

Uh, how is "big media" any different than "corporate America"?

America now has a "BIG...FOR SALE TO THE HEIGHTS BIDDER" sign posted in front of the White House!!

THIS IS A BAD RULING FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!!

TIME TO RISE UP AND SEND THIS CONSERVATIVE (REPUBLICAN) COURT A STRONG MESSAGE...THEY BETTER RUN FOR THE HILLS AND HIDE...THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE COMING TO KICK YOU AND YOUR BUDDIES OUT OF OFFICE!!!!!

MR. Z IS RIGHT! At last, someone who speaks with action and purpose! I haven't read a good word on the Supreme Court's decision. If they weren't the Supreme Court judges, any other group or individual, "the word" would be "they were paid off!" - just like any other gang of criminals!

Just one more reason to stop watching TV.
This ruling stinks,..I don't care how much sugar you put on it.
The fact that media profits from it makes it smell even worse.
There are absolutely no positives at all for the majority of U.S. citizens.
We deserve much, much better than this,...and I hope Obama succeeds in his efforts to repeal this garbage!

Right on with this story. A+ And I thought NOBAMA was going to ruin the courts. And what is funny-- look how many ppl believe what they see on TV, especially about this president. They think things will be solved in an hour, like on TV. This ruling is an attempt to hurt our democracy, but I saw this article that went into how the court came up with their decision and WHO benefits check it out
