A quick glance at what's news today ...

NBC Universal is unveiling much of its prime time programming plans to advertisers today. New York Times has biggest surprise -- a prime-time version of the Saturday Night Live staple "Weekend Update." Variety adds that NBC is stock piling dramas just in case Jay Leno flops at 10 p.m. 

Grim projections for TV advertising this fall. CBS looks to counter-attack with hype push.
London's Observer says advertising giant WPP to cut over 7000 jobs in Europe and U.S.

"X-Men" opens strong. "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" attracts small seance. LAT adds analysis on the female factor for "X-Men."  "X-Men" star Hugh Jackman for adaptation of graphic novel Ghostopolis. The Hollywood Reporter

MySpace needs makeover and fewer younger and poorer users, says New York Times.

Satellite broadcaster DirecTV and Liberty Entertainment to merge. WSJ says Chase Carey will remain at helm of DirecTV.

And finally Columbia Journalism Review says News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch is upset with Apple's iPhone.
