The girls lined up for ‘He’s Just Not That Into You,’ boosting the romantic comedy to No. 1 this weekend at the box office.

The New Line Cinema picture should finish the weekend with nearly $27.5 million in receipts, according to studio estimates. The movie’s emotionally (and financially) strong showing suggests that it will produce nothing but tears of joy for distributor Warner Bros. The audience was predominantly female in the film’s opening weekend, but next weekend should see more gender parity, predicted Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. distribution chief.

‘The girls will bring them in next weekend for Valentine’s Day,’ Fellman said. ‘We are off and running and should do very well next weekend. We’ve got a big hit on our hands.’

Twentieth Century Fox’s action picture ‘Taken’ had plenty of muscle in its second weekend, coming in second place with $20.3 million. That should push the total gross for the film to $53.3 million, according to box office tracker Nielsen EDI.

‘Coraline,’ the 3-D film from Focus Features that tells the story of an 11-year-old girl’s adventures in an alternate universe, had a bright opening with $16.3 million. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures’ Steve Martin caper, ‘Pink Panther II’ stumbled, landing in a disappointing fourth place with $12 million in its opening weekend, according to Sony estimates. Sony’s other comedy, however, was no slouch. ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop,’ with Kevin James, came in fifth with $11 million as audiences continued to find its humor arresting.
