'Twilight': Scenes from the 'Breaking Dawn' release party

In the name of bringing you hard news (and all things "Twilight"), I spent my Friday night at the Borders bookstore on La Cienega to take in the scene at one of the many "Breaking Dawn" release parties going on across the country.

By now, you've heard of Stephenie Meyer, her vampire romance book "Twilight" and the growing hysteria surrounding the upcoming movie starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

"Breaking Dawn" is the fourth and final installment in the saga, and it went on sale at midnight. (Above, friends Farnaz Vakili, 19, and Suzy Chon, 18, show their team spirit.)

Img_0604_3 Previously, only the "Harry Potter" series had inspired these nationwide book parties -- nights where stores stay open late to host trivia games, costume contests and giveaways while counting down the clock until they're officially allowed to sell new books to eager fans.

By 10:30 p.m., plenty of girls, some "Twilight" moms and yes, a few fanboys, had assembled in the store. (One Borders employee said between 100 and 120 showed up by the end of the event.)

Lost in a sea of girls, I talked to one the few men brave enough to show up. Twenty-five-year-old airline attendant Brian McDonald, who said he got hooked after he picked up the first book between flights. "The cover art caught my eye," he said. "It's just hard to put down."

The trivia game was surprisingly difficult: "Name the members of the Cullen family in the order they were turned into vampires." "Who was the doctor that tended to Bella after Edward left her?" "What is the name of the tribe Jacob belongs to?" (I read the books just last month and I was stumped.) Competitors didn't stand a chance against well-read Min Sung Lee, who not only answered most of the questions right, she answered them first. Lee won a "Breaking Dawn" shirt.

There was also some lively debate about whom Bella should end up with. (See the Team Edward and Team Jacob fan recruitment videos in post above). Team Jacob got pummelled by the overwhelming showing of Edward fans.

Unfortunately at this particular party, the costume contest didn't happen. No one came dressed as pale, golden-eyed vampires or hairy werewolves. There were, however, a few homemade T-shirts that, of course, supported Edward.

(Below left, Tea Kavrelishvili, 20, designed a Team Edward shirt for pal Natalie Streltsova, 14. Chelsea Felix-Shannon, 13, right, used a purple marker to deface an official Team Jacob iron-on.)

Freebies included stickers that read "Bella & Edward 4ever" and "My Heart belongs to Edward" and buttons that read "I was bitten by 'Breaking Dawn.'" Borders staffers passed around black cherry soda shots -- they weren't red enough to resemble anything close to blood -- and chunks of baked goods  labeled "blood clots." Cute.

Also on display were cherry-flavored fangs and pet wolves -- neither of which were actually "Twilight"-branded products. (Below, my friend Ann Donahue said this benign-looking wolf was a poor substitute for the fiery-hot Jacob.)

At the stroke of 12, everyone grabbed their copy of the 754-page saga-ender. Some opened it immediately and began to read, while others ran out of the store (presumably to get cozy with it at home.)

Now the four-month wait for the premiere of the movie begins...

omg i cant put the book down im reading it as i type this message in =] ahh so many surprises and WOAHH. i stayed up all nite rdng it and im mor than 3/4 of the way thru

I am reading this book now!!!!!!
I was unlucky and had to wait until this mourning to get it!

wow i was there woohoo

13 hours straight i finished the book.. the best book ever !

@ Chapters me and my frioend were waiting from 6:00 am till' 11:30 when the store got up. They hardly put the books on the shelfs when me, Sheldon (a Twilight Guy.), Shelby, and John(anotherTwilight Guy.), Joanne and Lucy got a hold of the godly book and read eachother chapters like we were in a book club or something. We did host one for Twilight and New Moon.LOVEIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am very disappointed in the book i thought it would be the best one by far but it turned out to be my least fav. i am soooo upset........ depressed

i'm getting mine tomorrow.

stupid australia. GRR

there are hardly any pre-release parties here >:Z

I have just now finished reading Breaking Dawn, and it COMPLETELY FLOORED ME!!!! No spoilers, but there's a definate change of pace to this book compared to the previous three. I absolutely LOVE IT! I wonder if you can imprint with a book series......???

I am soooo pissed. My bookstore wont get it till monday!! Grrrr!!!!!!

I <3 IT!!!!

The book's out. I have the money. Mom wont let me get it.... WTF? She said she's not driving me there to get it... I know she's DIEING to get it to... (I'm NOT letting her barrow it when i get it...)

Okay, for everyone who's purchased and read the book already, I'm so jealous. Because on May 25th I pre-ordered the book on amazon.com and forgot to use next day shipping, so instead I'm stuck with standard shipping and my book won't get here for another week! UGHHH!!! and it's too late to cancel the order and go buy the book. So I just have to wait it out.

I loved it!! No Spoilers promise.

I was floored! There were parts in the book that took my breathe away. I am very happy with the outcome of all the chatacters. ALL OF THEM.

It was an excellent read, I'm just a little sad its finished.

Can't wait for Midnight Sun (Twilight from Edwards perspective) and can't wait for the rest of the books. Stephanie Meyer said it was the last one from Bella's perspective, but there are many more charcters that are intresting enough to have their own books.

If you have read it you know of one character in particular who is def. intresting enough to have one of their own.

Oh! Can't wait. The movie will be excellent! Can't wait for that either.

If you haven't read it, pick it up! If you are still reading,,, please continue!

For anyone who says that Breaking Dawn does not live up to its expectations... wrong wrong wrong. I loved it! I just finished it yesterday. I had a wedding to go to but I didn't put it down even when a hot guy asked me to dance. I know, I'm a little obsessed. But it was totally worth it. Anyway, I don't know why everyone is saying that it is stupid or isn't right. Yeah, it is weird and more supernatural then the other books. And probably some people will be disappointed with the end and the overall outcome. But it was an amazing book and some people just need to get past their disappointment and see the book for what it truly is ---- awesome!!!!

Ohg Iam trying not to read it all in one day XD I got it at 1:30 in the morning O__O

OMG I LOVE PARADISE LOST! TEAM LUCIFER!!! oh...wait...wrong page...

OMG I finished the book Sunday night and I love it!! Im actually rereading it now its soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo freakin GOOD!!! ACk! I love Edward and Bella and Jacob and all the new characters which I will totally not mention... don't wanna ruin it for anyone. Read REad READ its AWESOME!!!! AHHHHH!!!

I can't believe how cool this is, i mean just to see that every single comment about this book that takes 13 hours o more to read has at least one grammatical or spelling error. It appears that everyone wanting this book has not bothered to learn to spell or learn english but wants to read books by people that can spell and use english correctly. I am totally impressed with the author reaching a target audience of retards and morons.

Not to mention the malapropisms... Don't worry, the same problem exists with Harry Potter fans. Just because people feverishly read a particular book series doesn't mean they are readers.

Why isn't anyone mentioning the rip off of Anne Rice? She had this down centuries ago. Read her books first. Vampire Lestat. While these are compelling and well written books, this is a genre that was mastered by a true novelist/poet/master.

nice blogs going on these are such a nice and and so intresting so keep it up

I absolutely LOVE all of the Twilight books. In my opinion it's what all teenage girls wish they had in a relation-ship, yes this statement includes me. I often find myself thinking about what it would be like to share what Bella has with Edward. I have read the books so many times that I've lost track! I would rather die than never be able to read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. Those books are my life and Stephenie Meyer has brought me to life. I am on my way to see the movie soon, yet I find myself with a stomach ache because the movies release is taking FOREVER!
