Your guide to Earth Day festivities in L.A.
Tomorrow's a good day to take off from work because it'll be Earth Day! And the whole city's pretty much shutting down to celebrate. Okay -- just a small portion of Wilshire Blvd. is shutting down. But in any case, here's your guide to a fun Green Day tomorrow:
The biggest event is Wilshire Center Earth Day -- Car Free Day, happening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wilshire Blvd. between Western and Harvard in Koreatown. Get there car-free and catch Michael Franti's performance! There'll also be raffles, giveaways, and 100 eco-exhibits and booths.
Wanna stick to the Westside? Join the EcoFabulous II Celebration at Santa Monica College, starting at 11 a.m. A number of local eco-organizations will be there to educate and celebrate with free food and raffles. The fun happens at the Clock Tower at the SMC Main Campus (1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica). Ride your bike to take advantage of the free valet! If you stick around SMC post-event, you can catch a free screening of the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?", showing at the HSS Building at 4 pm.
Or go downtown -- via public transit, of course -- and hear Latin singer/songwriter Carina Ricco (right) perform for Metro and Metrolink riders from noon to 1 p.m. at the Union Station South Patio.
Then party hop fashionably -- on foot! Romp, Vie, and Avita Co-op are all throwing eco-fashion parties on West Third Street. Avita's party kicks off 6 p.m.; the other two begin at 7 p.m. Get some green shopping done while enjoying free food, drinks and music.
Cyclists can join Babeland’s Bike Ride and Craftnight, starting at 7 p.m. (7007 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles) to take a bike ride around Hollywood, then learn to refashion bike tubes into eco-friendly floggers.
For a quieter evening in Pasadena, head to the Armory Center for the Arts (145 N Raymond Ave., Pasadena) and take part in "Green Living," a community panel and discussion on how to make your homes and lives more eco-friendly. Community experts will talk about energy and water conservation, solar power, green remodeling, green design and more. The event starts at 7 p.m.
Have a happy Earth Day, everyone.
