A.M. Greenlist: Subway love
>> Subway Crush: Like Craigslist's Missed Connections, except for subways. It's only in NYC right now, but maybe L.A.'s ready for its own version? (via Filmoculous)
>> Mothers of America -- let your kids ride the subways. Mom lets 9-year-old kid ride the NY subway, gets a lot of flack from upper-middle class peers. "Long story short: My son got home, ecstatic with independence." (Yes, it's still National Poetry Month.)
>> L.A. Department of Transportation gets a spiffy revamped website. The most touted features -- traffic and city parking info -- are geared toward helping drivers, but pedestrian and bicycling issues get their spot as well. (via lacityorgcd13)
>> Chat with Ed Norton, author of "Deep Economy" Bill McKibben, and global-warming activist Laurie David, thanks to the Earth Chats set up by Slate and the Washington Post this week.
>> The NY Times Magazine's Green Issue's outlines "Some Bold Steps to Make Your Carbon Footprint Smaller." It's all good stuff -- Take a half-hour break from work and enjoy the green read. Some of the new and cool stuff:
- Power utilities practicing “demand response”: Paying electricity consumers (usually big buildings like malls or skyscrapers) to turn out the lights when demand is too high.
- How to make a hay-box cooker. I won't be doing this myself, but the idea of a carbon-neutral Crock-Pot is intriguing.
- Urban homesteading, as exemplified by the Dervaes family in Pasadena. The family's Path to Freedom blog is both an inspiration and a great place to see pics of prancing goats.
