A busy Earth Day weekend: Start planning now
Earth Day festivities began last weekend -- and will continue on full steam ahead this weekend until we actually hit Earth Day on Tues., April 22 -- to be followed by even more Earth Day activities trailing after it. I already covered the enviro-clean up events here -- Now, here are the fun Earth Day activities this weekend that require less back-breaking labor:
First, wake up early on Saturday, April 19, to pick up some eco-skills:
- Get over to C.I.C.L.E.'s "Can You Handle It? Beginning Bike Handling Skills Workshop," starting at 10am in Northeast Los Angeles. RSVP to info@bikenow.org or 323-478-0060 for an exact location. Class fee: $15.
- Learn how to make your own cleaning products at a fundraiser for the Manhattan Beach Nursery School, 1520 Nelson Ave., Los Angeles. Cost: $5.
Then, pick a day festival to go to -- preferably one near you so you can walk, bike, or take public transit!
- Los Angeles. Take the kids or your inner child to Earth Day Expo 2008 at the Los Angeles Zoo! (poster right; zoo celebrations continue on Sunday, April 20).
- South Los Angeles. The South Los Angeles Earth Fest kicks off at 10 am at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, 3650 W. Martin Luther King Blvd.
- Pasadena. Independent bookstore meets enviro-activism! Head over to Vroman's Earth Day Celebration at Vroman's Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd.
- Manhattan Beach. Check out the South Bay Earth Day Concert & Water Wise Garden Tour at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach.
Cap the night Green Drinks' Earth Night, where everyone with an interest in environmentalism's invited to mingle, drink, and network. Jonathan Parfrey of Green L.A. will speak -- after which there will be food and drinks and music live DJs. Festivities begin at 7 pm at Whole Life Times, 1200 South Hope Street, Suite 300, Los Angeles. Cost: $10 donation (which covers food and drinks).
Then on Sunday, April 20, indulge your love of tomatoes at Tomatomania: A tomato seedling sale happening, oddly, at a party store. Sales begin at 9 am at Party on La Cienega, 350 S. La Cienega Blvd., Beverly Hills.
After you get your fill of tomatoes, join the free West L.A. Environment Meetup Group's Earth Day Party & Picnic. The event goes from 10 am to noon at Clover Park, 2600 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica.
Then bike or take the Big Blue Bus over to the free concerts at Green Apple Festival Los Angeles. This event will feature musical performances by Ziggy Marley, Juliette and the Licks, and others, as well as environmental speakers and opportunities for involvement with important environmental issues. It all begins at noon on the Santa Monica Pier.
