Weekly green topic: Water
This week's eco-topic: Water
In celebration of World Water Day, coming up on March 22, today begins Water Week at Emerald City!
Water already seems to be on everyone's mind, what with pharmaceutical contaminations, water shortages, water restrictions, and water rate hikes. Not all's bad news, however -- and even bad stuff can be seen as a chance for creative activism (at least on Mondays, the day of the week when I generally feel most optimistic). Here's some past water posts to catch you up:
Drink tap water
>> A prize-winning, almost-free drink: L.A. tap water. Our water won a taste award! Drink up.
>> Bring your own reusable water bottle. Why tote a cheap and dingy plastic bottle around when you can tote a stylish reusable bottle? Also, did you know Chicago wants to tax bottled water?
>> Ditch the bottled water habit at work. Find out why, and how.
>> Need a water filter? Find out what contaminants are in L.A. water (in general, our water's pretty clean!), and what filters might be the best option for you, whether for work or for home.
>> Concerned about pharmaceuticals in your water? Here are the answers to questions you may have -- including what filter will take out the pharmaceutical contamination.
Take action
>> Figure out your water footprint via H2O Conserve, and learn how you can shrink that footprint.
>> Eat out, drink tap water, do good. This week, many L.A. areas are charging $1 per glass of tap water -- which will be donated toward UNICEF's efforts to bring clean water to children around the world.
>> Take a tour of the L.A. River to see the revitalization efforts first-hand. Here's a list of upcoming tours.
>> Bike the Ballona Creek trail to see what new fishies are starting to show up, thanks to revitalization efforts.
>> Learn about the water crisis, which could be the first face of climate change, according to scientist and environmentalist David Suzuki. A new book by Maude Barlow titled "Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water" will catch you up on this important topic.
