Walk for Water: A Stroll by the beach becomes activism
This week's eco-topic: Water
Celebrate World Water Day tomorrow by taking a little walk by the Santa Monica Beach. Walk for Water -- an awareness-raising event "inspired by the 3-6 mile journey women and children make every day in water stressed countries" -- kicks off tomorrow at 9:30 am at the Santa Monica Pier.
Everyone's invited to take this easy stroll, which should be a lot more fun than the actual water-hauling journeys that inspired them. For one, Walk for Water will be just 2.5 miles, not 3-6 miles. In addition, the walk's easy enough that strollers and dogs are both allowed.
The weather forecast predicts a sunny Saturday for Santa Monica, so I recommend taking your own reusable water bottle -- as Ethos' plastic-encased water's likely to be everywhere to lead you into disposable temptation.
Ethos Water and Starbucks have joined the nonprofits CARE, International Medical Corps, and Project Concern International to get behind this event. And while Ethos does donate 5 cents per bottle to support water, sanitation and hygiene education programs, the irony of buying bottled water -- which discourages enjoying the good, clean running tap water in our 'hoods -- to bring clean running water to other countries is not lost on most environmentalists.
So enjoy the World Water Day stroll plastic-free! Post-walk, you can drop by one of the nearby Santa Monica restaurants participating in the Tap Project, which encourages diners to enjoy tap water while helping make clean tap water available to children around the world -- without bringing any plastic into it.
