>> Kangaroo killing. In Australia, 500 'roos are going to get tranquilized then given lethal injections. Too many 'roos were eating too much grass, endangering other species. (via grist)
>> Bison slaughter. "The number of Yellowstone National Park bison killed through disease management and hunting is on track to hit an all-time high this winter, after 87 more animals were caught Friday."
>> Polar bear probe. The decision about whether or not polar bears should be on the endangered species list should have been made back in February, but wasn't. Now, the Interior Department's inspector general's looking into the delay.
>> Fireplace fines. The South Coast Air Quality Management District board voted to fine homeowners who burn wood in fireplaces on high-pollution days during winter months.
>> According to an analysis by Boston Consulting Group, the Port of L.A. could lose at least 3% of its cargo container business if it decides to require shipping companies to employ truck drivers, who currently work as contractors. Requiring such hires is part of a larger plan to clean up the ports of L.A. and Long Beach -- although the latter recently decided not to require companies to employ truck drivers.
>> The fight over California's bid to set tougher car emissions standards continues. "A bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on Thursday that would overturn the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to prevent California from limiting the amount of greenhouse gas emissions spewed by cars."
