A.M. Greenlist: Fake flipper for a turtle named Allison
>> In odd eco-news: A turtle's about to get a prosthetic flipper. Why? Without the fake flipper, the turtle "would be destined to shallow water for the rest of her life and that becomes a quality-of-life issue," according to one turtle caregiver. (via green daily)
>> Check out a photo gallery of the latest eco-friendly gadgets showcased at the San Francisco's Cleantech Forum. There's a turbine powered by the flow in municipal water and sewer systems, an automatic bike and scooter rental system, and the newest in already-eco stuff like solar power, LED lights, and pre-fab houses.
>> The greenest car of all's the Honda Civic GX, not the Prius. However, only about 1,000 were sold last year, mostly to government or corporate fleets, only in California and New York -- which basically makes the Prius the greenest car available for the masses (who can afford one).
>> Wired names six steps to speeding up trains in the U.S. One step is eliminating grade level crossings -- something blogdowntown's been pushing for in the downtown area.
>> Fear of foam furniture? A study by Friends of the Earth, a network of enviro-groups, finds that "a high percentage of California furniture contains toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, and reproductive and neurological dysfunction." (via green daily)
>> The California cotton industry's shrinking, mostly for enviro-related reasons: Higher fuel prices and water shortages. Cotton is a very water-intensive crop -- so I suppose one could argue that arid California shouldn't have been growing so much cotton in the first place. (via OCA)
