Q&A: Green job hunt

Your eco-questions answered:

Greencareers Question:
What is the best place to start looking for enviro-related jobs (here in LA, or elsewhere)?  Is there a "green" monster.com? Cassandra

Answer:
Actually, Monster.com does indeed have a green section dubbed greencareers, targeted towards college students and recent graduates. Most of the jobs are entry-level type stuff, but it may be a good place to begin researching green companies (or companies going greener, however seriously or unseriously).

A few green-specific job sites have popped up, though none are very robust as of yet, and none have very good search functions. Still, maybe one of these listings will be what you're looking for. Here are three to check out:

At this point in time, you might actually have better luck with the more general nonprofit job sites, which often list many enviro-related jobs. Both Idealist and Opportunity Knocks are fairly well established and have lots of great listings as well as great search functions. Changefan.com is newer and less functional, but may still be worth a look.

I’d also suggest contact enviro-organizations in the L.A. area -- or areas you'd be willing to move to -- that share your values to see if they have any appropriate openings.

Happy job hunting!

Update, 2/15/08: Enviro-site Grist has also added a job board.

i followed the links from your page to "greencareers.com", thinking that there might be a possible career improvement for me somwhere on that site.

by far, the most interesting (ok, read: disappointing) and readable ditty on the green careers website (the rest of the site is spaced out) )was the wal-mart ad. yes, walk into a viable career at wal-mart!!! has wal-mart completely changed its identity... and stock? now it's environmentally conscious? not a workplace i would have expected to find at greencareers.com (http://www.monstertrak.monster.com/greencareers/).

on the other hand, when i went back to greencareers.com just now to check something, there was a u.s. navy ad in the same place where the wal-mart ad just was.

another green career (not!) on the green career website. just think about the effects of NAVY sonar on the whales. environmentally sensitive, no?
