A.M. Greenlist: Mostly-eaten beef recalled
>> 143 million pounds of beef produced by a Chino slaughterhouse gets recalled. Unfortunately, most of the stuff's already been eaten, because the recall applies to beef from Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. since Feb. 1, 2006.
>> The Ethicurean analyzes the recall: "In plain English, [the recall is happening] because the plant processed "downer" cattle, those too sick to stand on their own."
>> The recall comes after the Humane Society publicized graphic footage of workers at Hallmark using forklifts, high-pressure water sprays, wooden sticks and electric shocks to force sick cattle up to be processed into beef.

This is why all beef needs to be tested. Wildly expensive? Sure. That just means the price of beef will have to go up. But the health costs aren't worth saving the money in the short term.
