>> A knee brace that charges your cellphone. Walk for a minute, and this 3.3-pound knee device will harness enough energy to power a celly for half an hour.

>> Rep. Henry A. Waxman subpoenaed the Environmental Protection Agency documents on the decision to deny California permission to impose tougher emissions standards on vehicles. Waxman (D-Beverly Hills) is the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Earlier: The fight for California's tougher car emissions standards.

>> No go on EPA's mercury cap-and-trade program. A federal appeals court's "three-judge panel agreed unanimously with the challengers' view that the rule would not adequately protect the public."

>> Tiny fish called the longfin smelt are the latest addition to the California Fish and Game Commission's protected list.

>> Pelicans may be taken off the endangered species list, per the Interior Department's proposal. Once devastated by DDT, these birds have made a healthy comeback.

>> Wired has a preview of The Discovery Channel's Earth Live, "new visualization tool for understanding the dynamics of global climate change" that "allows users to see nearly real-time satellite data of the globe's cloud cover, water vapor, and sea surface temperatures." Earth Live will go live on Monday.

>> A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400 will fly on biofuel later this month. More accurately, the jet will use a blend of 80 percent conventional jet fuel and 20 percent biofuel. The airline says this biofuel is a type that doesn't compete with food and freshwater resources. (via Freakonomics)

>> Due to enviro-concerns, Staples cut off contracts with paper company Asia Pulp & Paper. Staples belatedly joins Office Depot in dumping AP&P over concerns that it feeds rainforests into its pulp mill.
